Xbox 360 Fall '08 Dashboard update adds 16x10 widescreen, expanded resolutions
Those eagerly awaiting extra resolution and widescreen support from their Xbox 360 are getting a treat in the packed fall update. Not mentioned during the conference, but noted in a letter to Xbox Live Members from Marc Whitten, is word about upcoming 16x10 widescreen support, as well as 1440x900 or 1680x1050 output resolutions. This should make things a bit easier for people who like to hook their console up to LCD monitors and avoid extra scaling and bars when hooked up via VGA or HDMI. Now if only we can get some HD Netflix streams...

***WARNING: Flame Bait ahead***
God Damn am I glad I got a 360 instead of a PS3.
XboxLive rocks!!
but the ps3's going to be the best thing ever soon only not yet...
PS3 wait wait wait ummm very soon, okay the first one didn't but the SEQUEL to __________ will REALLY show the PS3 shine. And when Home comes out in 201x it will put XBL to shame!
funny that Xbox beat Sony to its own HOME service
Xbox live is trash. You guys pay for what you could get for free on PC, except on PC, you get much more. You can get a 4850 Graphics card for $160, throw in a $100 CPU and you are killing 360 graphics, for less.
I think that's a solid set of updates (the Netflix thingy in particular) but I wouldn't discount what Sony may say today. They are likely to launch a download service, Home and we already know they have PVR functionality lined up. Maybe they even plan to beef up their browser & Flash plugin so they don't need an "exclusive" deal to stream Netflix movies.
About Netflix, Is it some quirk of the rental model that Netflix that lets them stream a movie they send to you in the post or did they toss a few $$$ at studios to let them stream their older titles? Streaming seems to be only available on a subset of titles so maybe some titles are just cheaper to stream than post on disc.
1920x1200 please.
Yes I HOPE they include 1920x1200 so my 360 can look good on my syncmaster 245BW otherwise anything lower looks like crap
I think the Xbox 360's encoder is only capable of outputting 1080p, so I guess some people are out of luck :(.
happy to see the VGA resolution support. its always bugged me
Isn't the bigger news netflix streaming to the 360? They will go HD at some point, and netflix has a huge customer base. Look how many people picked up those $100 roku boxes.
Netflix is the big news for me ... we've been using the 3rd party plugin and the browsing is slow and the player flips out frequently. Native streaming to the 360 makes my day!!! I like keeping the video sources to a minimum ... so not adding another devices like the Roku is great.
@Dany,
Take your broken English and your shitty spam link and go back to eastern Romania.
1680x1050 hell yeah, its about time
awesome
I'm just excited about the Netflix Instant watch thing, for us netflix subscribers.
Ps3 and xbox owners have been waiting for this since day once. As a ps3 owner i'm getting a 46'' hdtv. Not because of the ps3 but because it will be awsome.
The only reason you guys think this is soo cool is because your broke a$$es can't afford a real TV, not to mention by the time this update comes out 90% of you will have your XBOX 3$hittys send in due to RROD.....in the mean time I will be rocking out on my PS3 and 120hz 52"
Funny... i've been "rocking out" on 360 on my 106" tv for years with nary a problem....
Woohoo!!! 1680*1050 about time!
To the guys that hate xbox live because they think a PC is better, or a PS3 is better: SHUT. YOUR. DANG. FACES. The reason I don't game on a PC for "free" is that the experience is so UTTERLY HORRENDOUS that I don't wish to submit myself to that kind of torture for any price. The thing is, Xbox LIVE is so wonderful because the games are all designed to meet the SAME specs because every single 360 is exactly the same! PC developers cannot do this because PC owners have so many different configurations. So Halo 3 can be tested to perfection on the Bungie 360, and it will be exactly the same experience on MY 360. They can also completely integrate LIVE with every single game, something PC users cannot do. You need a myriad of usernames and passwords for PCs that are likely to be forgotten or just a pain to type in every time you switch games. So thanks, but I'll stick with my reasonably priced 360 and a 60 dollar annual fee for a quality gaming experience, online and off.
As for the PS3... LOL at PSN, seriously. Yeah, it may be free, but it also allows people with dial-up to join, and that means LAAAAAAAG. Also, only a few games allow you to use the same username and password between games, and there is as of this posting ZERO integration like the 360 has. I have a PS3, so don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. I got the thing for games, but since there aren't any worth shelling out 60 bucks for that I can't get on the 360 with slightly better graphics, I use it as a cheap and pretty looking Blu-Ray player. Because what? Oh that's right, the PS3's graphics card can't handle lighting as well as the 360's can. It can do textures up the wazoo, but lighting = epic fail. And since most of what people use to determine what's real and what isn't is lighting, I guess that means the 360 looks more realistic.
So all of you remember this: 360 + Xbox LIVE = SuperAwesomeHappyFunTime for a great price, and PS3 + PSN = SuperAwesomeHappyFun(someofthe)Time for a great price, and PC + Internet = OMGWTFWhyWon'tThisStupidGameWorkEvenThoughIMeetAllTheRequirementsTime.
tristan = a man of reason. i love how ps3 fanboys have no good games 2 play & must go 2 xbox articles & whine and complain. ps3 is a blueray player & thats it. 3-4 games r good the rest suck. 360 blows everything outta the water. xbox live>psn. psn sucks in so many ways. as for pc, yeah there good but too much of a hassles & 2 many modders.
Xbox 360 experience > PS3 experience
heck
wii>ps3
I recently got my 360 and will never go back to PC gaming. Here are the reasons why
On a PC you have many different system configs running under a crappy OS that hogs RAM that games need so much. On Xbox the games are tested on a 360 and they will run the same on every 360, no need for tedious Graphics Options. I swear sometimes I spend more time getting the right Graphics Settings than actually playing.
Online gaming on the PC is a horror with only one good service. Steam with Valve games, great service. Unfortunately they may have great, yet not abundant online games. Xbox Live you (usually) have one central Username tied into your Dashboard, couldn't be easier.
People always go around saying "PC is cheaper and you get better graphics" and so on. Here is a challenge for all you. Try finding a PC for $250 (bit more where I live but never mind that) that can run great looking games smoothly at 1920x1080 resolution.
