"Sayonara, you overpriced dinosaur! I'm enjoying my virtually-identical, MUCH cheaper TiVo HD."
Granted, both my Tivo Series 3's were gotten for a total of less than $1,000 out of pocket (and that is not a "price" after rebate I am "quoting"), but I'm perfectly happy with the money I spent. The bigger hard drive along makes these not quite virtually-identical. 32 hours HD versus 20 hours HD is about 60% bigger. I don't think I could "live" with only 20 hours HD on either of my S3's.
Can't a large external storage device be plugged in to provide recording time limited only by the size of the external disk??? Like an external 1TB or something?
You could've done what me and a buddy did. We each got a TiVo HD and replaced the harddrive. With the software from mfslive its a snap. Now my HD has a 500gb (64 hours of HD recording) and my buddy has a 640 (70 hours of HD). I spent less than $300 total (including shipping). For the cost of a S3 you could get a HD a 1tb to put inside and a 1tb external to pair with it.
DavidB you can only officially use the TiVo HD with the MyDVR Expander eSata. Which at $150 (cheapest I've seen) is a total rip for 500gb of storage. But with that software I mentioned you can pair any eSata drive with the internal drive (from what I've read anyway, I haven't done it myself).
I upgraded my TiVo HD with a Hitachi Cinemastar 1 GB internal drive for less than the price of an S3. Granted, the S3 had value when it was the only game in town, but once the HD came out, there wasn't much of a need for it anymore.
Sorry if I sounded kind of flippant, it was supposed to be humorous.

You must've filled that thing pretty quick! :P
I realize I could have replaced a hard drive, but I am on my 4th Tivo now {one of which I am retiring from paying service this year -- I transfered the Lifetime Service which I originally paid $249 for (in 2002?, which was money well spent) from my 1st Tivo to my 3rd Tivo (which is also my 1st Series 3 Tivo)}, and I have never replaced any of the hard drives. Besides, like I said, my 1st S3 cost me about $550 (which I got almost a year before the TivoHD came out). My 2nd 250GB S3 cost me about $400 (from Jellyfish, which used to have good deals), and some of the 250GB S3's have gone for about $300-$350. I should have gotten a $200 rebate to bring that price down even further if I hadn't sent in the rebate about two days late. I am not going to attach an external drive to either of my S3's.
