TWC adds a fresh dozen HD channels in parts of West LA
No longer will you be ridiculed by nearly everyone else in Southern California, West LA residents -- Time Warner Cable has just dropped its latest dozen HD channels in your area. According to a local, he asserts that the SDV conversion has finally been completed in the region, enabling Discovery HD (418), Golf / Versus HD (423), ESPNews HD (426), CNN HD (432), HGTV HD (433), Food HD (434), Disney HD (435), ABC Family HD (436), TLC HD (437), A&E HD (438), History HD (439) and National Geographic HD (440) to be seen at long last. Also of note, USA HD (450) and CNBC HD (451) were added for additional Olympics coverage last Friday, though we'd expect those to vanish in under a fortnight. [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]Update: Exact neighborhoods and corresponding launch dates now after the jump. Thanks, HD!

Yeah, I noticed at the end of the olympics coverage on USA HD on Time Warner Cable that a "Unavailable Program" message is displayed instead of normal USA HD programming. I was able to watch about 5 minutes of burn notice last night before it cut off. Bummer considering USA HD is in the top three of HD channels I really want.
This posting is HIGHLY deceiving. There are GIANT chunks of Los Angeles that haven't received the new channes and won't get them until November at the *earliest.* I'm personally in West Los Angeles and have not received the promised channels. After repeated calls to tech support and customer service, it turns out those of us in areas that were previously served by Adelphia/Comcast need to wait another 3 months.
TWC in Los Angeles is outrageous - the programming is substandard and so is the service. There's a reason the City of Los Angeles is suing them.
Yeah, I'm in Culver City (Westside of Los Angeles), and I don't get any of these. I'm dropping Time Warner next week and going to a Satellite service.
I hate this company!!!

If TWC is using SDV to squeeze out a few more HD channels, a number of issues are still present...
* How do they get more channels out of the measly 500MHz system. That's right, they don't, unless they either rebuild the system to 1GHz or 3GHz or they kill off the analog channels. As it relates to the latter, it is just another short term band-aid. Given TWC's lack of timeliness, how long do you think it will take for them to get around to those?
* TWC still over-re-compresses the signal resulting in buffer issues, mosquito noise, banding, and a major loss of detail.
* The TWC STB is a royal POS. A whopping 250GB hard drive so you can record 10 shows in HD. Nothing like the box locking up everyday. And I just love all those home integration features. NOT!
What is this I hear about new HD channels? It's all a lie, I live in west LA and I still haven't received any of those channels. Time Warner REALLY, REALLY, sucks here in Los Angeles, I can't think of a worst company than this crap.
Geeze folks. Calm down. If you don't like TWC, cancel. Just stop whining.
I'd like to, but we don't have a single alternative. There's no FIOS, no AT&T, and most of us in urban environments don't have a clear line of sight to get satellite. They've got us by the nuts and provide awful service.
What they don't mention is that their HD looks so dreadful it's not really worth watching.
I live in Toluca Lake and got all of these channels. Too bad the heavy pixilation makes them and most other channels almost unwatchable now. Since these channels where added, I have missed all of my scheduled recordings because what is recorded is nothing but a jumbled mess. Thanks Time Warner!!
I live on the West Side of Los Angeles and my TWC local office is in Culver City. I checked this morning and of the long list of supposed new channels we have only 450 USAHD and 451 CNBCHD.

All I can say is wow- they told me that Downey wouldn't be getting the channels until late November.
Time Warner sucks- i wish that i didn't love my series three tivo so much or i'd be using direct tv
I don't get it. Why would they get rid of USA HD if its already set up? Wouldn't USA HD be the next logical step? Is there something I'm missing?
I was supposed to get these channels on July 21st Im in Redlands.....Still waiting...after many phone call and many time rebooting by POS box They finally told me Oh there is a problem with the role out.......Big Bad Time Warner I wonder which will come first new HD channels or an update of the early 80's menu software...Too bad I have no other cable options.
TWC is also a crock in Dallas. CNBC-HD and USA-HD were added for the Olympics, but they're gone now.
Yeah, they took away USAHD. WTF was the point of that? TWC really do fuck shit up for everyone. So they say we get the channels october? Good. shit.
Ya i was pissed too when they took usahd away. Im like finally burn notice, monk, and psych in beautiful hd with 5.1 And im still waiting for the rollout here in simi valley.
They finally added the channels in my area(6 days after they said they would). Gotta say im happy. Crisp and clear all around.
