Hands-on: Sony shows off prototype 400-disc Blu-ray Mega Changer

The percentage of electronics at the end of their lives which were recycled.
The EPA found that the percentage remained consistent from 1999-2005. Even as recycling rates went up, the amount of electronics reaching end of life outpaced the increase, leaving the figure static. (source: EPA, July 2008)

These need to make a come back! Well, as long as they have a descent on screen display of all the movies in the unit. It also would need some sort of automatic catalog feature so there was no manual entry. If they had that, I would think about buying one.
Though, I most likely will turn to a media server using something like a popcorn hour as the head unit.
I didn't know that many movies have been put to blue ray yet!
It is BUD-Live equipped so it could very likely do auto cataloging for you, as that means it is internet capable. All they would have to do is have a database the player looks up the titles on.
About time! The replacement for the RS-232 lovin' DVP-CX777ES is long overdue!
YES!! I am in love. This is what I have been waiting for. Anyone want to buy a well cared for Sony 300 DVD changer?
Inadequate. 400 doesn't even begin to approach the number of blu-ray discs that I will most likely purchase over the next 10 years (hell, five years).
So, buy a second one. I own two of the 400-disc DVD changers from Sony. I really do not know why this should be so difficult to manufacturer from a design standpoint. The only thing you are doing over the current SD-DVD version is swapping a drive, adding an Ethernet port, etc.
Sony is just so slow.
Gotta love Blu-ray. Especially 400 of them. Honestly though, is it that hard to just put one in every time you watch a movie? Laziness, you gotta love it.

This system comes in handy for people like me, who have their system out of sight and out of mind.
I just bought a new house and I will be stashing all my equipment in a closet down the hall. I do not have a problem putting in a movie, but I wouldn't like that have a large amount of media at my finger tips would be nice.
Zargon, this baby will be the same price as your new house!
But does it eat/scratch disks just as efficiently as the DVP-CX995V?
Gotta have it, assuming it's less than $1000.
Interesting... what does the "RENTAL" button do?
At $40 per Blue Ray disc, that's $16,000 to fill up this changer. Are you kidding me? If you buy that many Blue Rays, Sony should just give you a changer for free.
40 bucks!! Unless it's a big set I assume you mean 20-25 for most new releases. Pretty comparable to what DVD's were a few years ago. And this thing does handle DVD's and CD's too.
Does it not make more sense to get a media server, stick in a heap of 750GB drives and put a lowend system in the rest? It may not equate to the 20TB of storage this would hold but it would hold alot more movies due to smaller file size. A 2hour 1080p film in matroska format with 5.1 would be about 8GB. Doing the maths, you would have to get 5x 750GB films to get 400 films. But thats buckets more flexible and disregarding that, its heaps more reliable too.
This just proves even more that optical data storage is COMPLETELY OUTDATED. Seriously, a 400 disc changer? The size of 2 or three of the components in my entertainment center already? That or a PC the size of my mousepad to store everything digitally...Pathetic.
Is that a rotary knob i see?
Can't wait to have it. Hopefully it will be backward compatible wth DVD/+-R. Also would love to see it integrate well with Escient. Does any one know if it is daisy chained stackable?
DVD Empire has 964 Blu-Ray for sale as of 8 Sept 2008 - so I guess you could fill two of them at this time and soon 3.
Can't wait to get 1... I figure it's gonna run @ least $2000
Already have the Sony CX-777ES, hooked up to my control4 which I love to view all the art work.
Hey guys, I got an idea. Every time a new piece of electronic hardware comes out, let's place our iPhone next to it to show everyone how big (or small) it is! What a great way to judge size instead of looking at specs!
Wow a Hippacrocapig dressed as a 400 disc blu-ray movie jukebox!
Disc based movie distribution is dead and this machine looks like a suitable headstone.
I bet it sounds like a particularily noisy tombola as it spins that loaded carousel, click, click, click, ad nauseum. Next.
Brucie B.....please please please move your collection to a digital medium where you can control the content and not vicea versa, Ooo and that solution will not cost you $2000.
