Panasonic's Profile 2.0 DMP-BD35 Blu-ray player priced at $299
Ah, now this is more like it. Just a day after we realized that Panasonic's DivX-lovin' DMP-BD55 would be hitting the streets at $399, in comes confirmation that its little brother -- the DMP-BD35 -- will be offered for a full Benjamin less. Yep, that means you're looking at a UniPhier-equipped Profile 2.0 Blu-ray deck that's launching at under $300. We're still not told how soon it'll be in stock, but $299.95 for a BD-Live-capable standalone player is something worth paying attention to. Now, how's about we dip down even lower for Black Friday?

Can they please lower it to a 150.00 already. If they have pofile 1.0 machines with no BD Live on sale on Black Friday you can count me out then too. That's 150-99.00 cost is the magic mark for me. When that happens I am there!!! Otherwise my money is going to DVD still. Hey you can't turn down 3.99 or 6.99 SD DVD's at BB! Especially in this economy!
Gee, I wonder who has been stating that towards Holiday season, prices will be coming down....hmmm....
Unfortunately, our intellectually challenged brethren (former HDDVD fanboys) will still find reason to gripe. Even though these players are now starting out cheaper and will no doubt be on sale for the holidays, it will not be enough. So to preempt any tirades, I say to them, you're right blu-ray is still too expensive for YOU and YOU should just keep buying DVD's and downloads. The rest of us will happily enjoy our HD goodness...
My comment retroactively applies to 1138 at the top of the comments. That is all.
It would be great if cheaper player brought more average consumers into blu ray, and then studios tried to attract those new consumers to actually pick up discs by lowering disc prices.
But I have a feeling the studios like selling the Blu version of Cars for $30 (Best Buy price). Ridiculous.
The Blu-ray prices are trending downward and that is a good thing. All this takes a little time as it is a pretty new format. The prices seem to be dropping faster than when regular DVD was introduced 10 years ago. This player is a 2.0 profile and it may be in the low 200's around Christmas. That is not a bad price at all.
This is great. So my guess is these players will be found retail for at least $250, maybe less. Get the marketing ramped up, and BD may have a fighting chance this holiday season. Studios will still need to lower their prices though. I know about shopping online and getting good deals, but I do agree with many that BB and CC is where many folks still shops and browse. And movies are one of the biggest impulse buys, so the price has to be attractive for those browsers to want to pick up a BD when they are in the store. For this season, magic number should be no greater than $20 for new releases, and lowering catalog titles to $15. Pair that up with all the sales on flatscreens and package deals with BD players, this season could see BD take off in a big way.
BTW: $700 billion would buy a lot of BD movies... give the bailout to the people!!!
the questions is, how does this compare to the PS3.
untill a 2.0 Blu-ray player is significantly less than a PS3, (or can at least produce better picture/sound...etc) than why should a consumer get anything else?
While i haven't picked one up yet, i'll be getting me a PS3 for Xmas/boxing day...and i might get me a game while i'm at it.
FYI,
Just to clarify your confusion of Panasonic Blu-ray generations
DMP-BP10 1st gen
DMP-BD10A 1st gen (a half price version of DMP-BD10)
DMP-BD30 2ond gen (new chips, motherboard and Java)
DMP-BD50 3rd gen ( added network connectivity and BD-Live)
DMP-BD55/35 4th gen ( chip change, additional audio and added 7.1 analog)
Sorry for this being late for the correct Podcast, but I thought you might like to know the differences even if they are incremental
