Apple TV update finally lets you buy hi-def TV shows from the couch

Now sure why this update wasn't available at launch, but starting today Apple TV fans can download update 2.2 which among some security updates and Genius features, finally allows you to buy hi-def TV shows from the comfort of your own couch. What's also nice is that it doesn't matter where you buy 'em, because just like when you order a HD show via iTunes, you also get an iPod friendly version.

I don't understand your statement regarding purchasing via iTunes. In the screenshot you posted, the last sentence states the following:

"What's more, every HD-quality episode also comes with an iPod- and iPhone-compatible standard definition version of the show."

Unless the new firmware has changed things, the Apple TV can't even do high def (i.e. 720p or higher) at the TV standard 30fps. At 30fps the max resolution playback of the device is 960x540. Shows would have to run at 24fps to attain 720p.

Most movies would be but this article is talking about TV shows which I assume are usually 30fps in the US unless they're tring to look "cinematic". I don't know the mechanics of converting an HD 30p or 60i show to 24fps but I expect it means dropping or blending frames. Hardly a desirable solution.
