Panasonic's 58-inch VIERA TH-58PZ800U gets reviewed
Panasonic's 58-inch TH-58PZ800U probably isn't the first bigger-than-big plasma that comes to mind when shopping for the best, and even though Pioneer's KURO line is currently basking in the limelight, this bugger is still probably worth a look. The PDP was recently reviewed over at CNET, and somewhat surprisingly, the set was found to be a solid performer -- if not an outright star. Critics found that it reproduced deep black levels / highly accurate colors, had excellent uniformity compared with RPTVs and featured a very satisfactory assortment of ports. The only rubs were the lofty price tag and somewhat lackluster picture controls, but we're just thrilled to see some real competition in this space.

Panasonic's plasma's have been contenders for a couple years now, even the 700u series were solid performers for the money.
I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but I thought this was rather common knowledge. While the KURO line has always been the holy grail of TVs, the VIERAs generally come in a very close second every year. In this year's home theater magazine face off, 1st place was a KURO (the only 720 TV in the group I might add), and 2nd place was a VIERA.
Depending on the street price this could be a very popular display. 50" has been the hot spot for many years but as they need replaced I think this big boy will garner a lot of action. If it fits your budget then 58" compared to 50" is a huge difference. Hanging it on a wall may be a major concern though, as it should be.
"had excellent uniformity compared with RPTVs"
Like that's hard to do. Hey look, this Porsche has excellent handling compared with this Kia.
Seems like due to 1080/24p issues, a customer might be better served with a 50" Kuro over this 58" Panny. But those extra 8 inches go a long way to make up for it.
whew appears sound good if also as good models?
These TV's are pretty sweet. I'd take it over a smaller Pioneer KURO.
