Neil Young's Archives Blu-ray collection likely axed, will be DVD only
We're pretty sure we speak for music / Blu-ray fans everywhere when we say: "What?" At the JavaOne Conference in San Francisco earlier this year, one of the main news bits to emerge from the show was that Neil Young's entire music archive was going to be released in Blu-ray form. In fact, it was even stressed that BD interactivity would give purchasers the ability to download more songs, photos and tour information via their internet-connected decks. Now, we're hearing that the Archives Volume 1 (1963 - 1972) is being relegated to DVD only, and even the DVD collection is being delayed from November 3rd to "sometime in 2009." Of course, there's still time for Reprise to change its mind and appease all the Blu-ray lovers out in the crowd, but we aren't feeling too optimistic about the possible change of heart.

This is a niche audience and since they're spending top dollar on this, why not give them the supposed next generation format? Stoopid.
I think you answered your own question. It's a niche product, and you're talking about putting it on what today is a niche format. How many people belong to both niches? Three?
For the economies of scale to work, they have to expect to sell a few tens of thousands of units. It's a little unlikely they could do that with a Neil Young Blu-ray disc.
That sucks. I saw Heart Of Gold in HD and it was awesome.
No, your avatar is awesome :)
It's simple, really. Why have people spend money on 1 blu-ray disc when they can buy 4 DVDs? Then the box set of all the DVDs along with the bonus disc. When all that's out of the way, then the blu-ray will come.
Booooooo!
Sniff.
This is an unfortunate rumor and completely untrue.
The 10-Disc Blu-ray set will still be released in early 2009.
No loss at all. Better use the resources on someone that can sing and actually has a show rather than just standing or siting there as a statue.
For someone like NY, CD is way more than eneough
But Pearl Jam likes him! Wait - they suck now too.....
Neil Young is still alive?
I almost dislocate my fingers reaching for the dial when his odd-sounding dated vocals shriek through my speakers. Yikes. And to imagine folks want to -see- him at the same time. Oh well, the beauty of music. It's subjective.
The author needs to read the original article again - the Billboard article says "the latest word from Reprise is that "Archives" will be Blu-ray only." That's Blu-ray only, not DVD only. Sheesh.
