So I believe in general that the tech is mature enough. There are bound to be the odd glitches of course.

I agree that I'd want to know what I was letting myself in for before buying a no-name. The Funai is the basis of models by Philips and Onkyo and seems like a good, cheap player just so long as you're going to plug it into an TV or a receiver with HDMI. But I would definitely be worried about support for the device if an issue did arise. The owners thread on AVSForum is positive about the player but a couple of non-showstopper glitches have been found. Therefore I would be more tempted at the moment to buy the BDP1500 since I believe Samsung would be more likely to release an update if one was required.

DrXym

Comments on Insignia NS-BRDVD Blu-ray player: now below $200 at Best Buy

Even if you look at the BD-P1500 (which I own) thread on AVS, there are a few people encountering a few showstopping issues. One appears to be related to borderline BD production quality and error correction in the player causing skips and such. We're still in the period where player compatibility is being dialed in and all kinds of odd issues pop up from time to time that require minor tweaks to these early players. The BD-P1500 may be a 4th gen player, but it's nowhere near the polish of a 4th gen DVD player back when that format was starting up. I am, however, willing to deal with these potential issues because I know Samsung is backing the player and I've had good experiences with Samsung support over the years.

On the other hand look at Insignia's support page.

http://www.insignia-products.com/t-customer_support.aspx

There isn't even a location for firmware updates as of yet. That doesn't mean they couldn't add one, but in general their support site seems very limited. Also, the lack of an ethernet port or USB port means any updates to the firmware must first be burned to a disc. Not the most user friendly method.

I guess my point is that this player could be dangerous as far as blu-ray adoption goes. Just say it drops to $150 for black friday, gets bought en-mass, and then has a major compatibility issue with a high profile title (like maybe The Dark Knight which will likely includ a ton of advanced features.) Do you think Insignia's support is going to be ready to leap into action Christmas morning to resolve the issues of thousands of pissed off people who rightfully assumed that if they bought a blu-ray player and a blu-ray disc, they would be in the clear?

Everyone is so ready to push blu-ray on the masses that no one has really sat back and wondered if blu-ray itself is mature enough for mass adoption. I don't get the same level of confidence when looking at standalone players that I did looking at standalone DVD players in 1999. These beasts seem much more finicky and have a far less unified user experience.

Hell, again look at the BD-P1500. If you have it connected to ethernet and download the 2.0 update, you better have a flash drive attached to that USB port because discs like Ironman will just flat out refuse to start with no sort of error warning due to the lack of storage for BD-Live content. We are still very far from the average user just being able to plug in a player and watch a movie without and caveats.

bull3964

Comments on Insignia NS-BRDVD Blu-ray player: now below $200 at Best Buy

Expected to be even less on Black Friday:

http://blackfriday.gottadeal.com

Mike

Comments on Insignia NS-BRDVD Blu-ray player: now below $200 at Best Buy

HA!
