DIRECTV2PC actually goes live, for real this time
Heads-up, DirecTV users. That DIRECTV2PC software that you've been waiting so anxiously for is finally available for download. Like, for real this time. Just as a refresher, the CyberLink software enables PC users to stream HD recordings from their DirecTV Plus HD DVR receiver to a connected computer in the home, and if that sounds like something you'd be interested in, may we encourage you to hit the read link and follow the steps to downloading. Oddly enough, the direct URL to CyberLink's site only seems to work when you connect through DirecTV's site, but we're hoping a fix is in the works.

Downloading at a blazing 15KBps, can't wait to try it out.
Download, installed, and now it can't find my DVRs.
Downloaded, installed but it can't find any "servers".
Servers and DVRs are two different things.
If you can't see your DVRs, then your DVRs need new software. The new software could be out as soon as this week.
If it can find the DVRs, but when you double-click a movie it says it won't play it because it can't find a server it can't mean the license server it contacts when you start playing. If those aren't up (or don't like your key), then it won't play.
Don't bother- D* has not done the national push for this, you will need something like 0x0290... In other words if you don't have the CE, it won't find the DVR.
Any idea when the national push of that software version will be to allow the Directv2PC software to work?
My understanding is "soon". At the very least you can download the CE in the Friday night push.
DBSTalk has a nice PDF review online as well (pictures!). http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=143143
How does one become a member of the CE program?
You don't, you just do it. It's all in that PDF I'm sure, look for something like "02468"
If you want to use the CE releases, I would highly recommend going to dbstalk.com and joining the CE (cutting edge) forum. It has info on how to do it, and it is your ONLY source of assistance if you run the CE software. You are not supposed to call DirecTV phone support with any issues you have when running CE software, so if you go it alone and get in trouble, you could have a rough time.
No need for CE, fellas!!!!
Just got the auto update message when I turned on my reciever. Proud to say that the 290 software update works as promised with this service. It's acually kind of neat for my household because we only use 1 tv - my KDS50A3000.
So now if the kids want to watch some of their DVR'd stuff then they can do so at the computer - leaving my HDTV for me (or my wife, as it is lol).
Don't know why, but my receiver HR20 spontaneously rebooted an hour ago, I verified all the cables, phone and network were plugged in and checked for new update, no dice, but few minutes ago it prompted me to download the new update 290, installing as I type.
Just finished the download. I am not really interested in the pc streaming but it stated that 1080p will be one of the new features of the upgrade which is cool. Also more in depth title descriptions. Previously 1080i was the highest quality you could get, 1080p is Blu-Ray quality, p stands for progressive for people that are unaware. I am a little suspect that this would be true 1080p quality because the signal from satellite is a compressed signal.
Yep, its national now. Guess we know when "soon" means-
Works fine in a Laptop, Dual-core 1.6, 3 gb ram, mobile intel graphics card, no acceleration hardware, some HD mpeg4 recordings are slow, but SD and mpeg2 recordings play excellent. Wireless-G. Using latest CE update. Remember this is beta testing.
Does this work even if you are in a remote location away from home? (hope so - crossing fingers). This would save me 300 bucks on buying a sling box...
Its possible if you can view/control your desktop remotely :)
For remote viewing: You can set up a VPN into your home network from the remote location. Just make sure broadcast traffic passes over your VPN and you're set. The application won't be able to tell you're not on your home network.
I use OpenVPN for this purpose. A Linux box at home with the server side and the OpenVPN-GUI package on Windows for the remote client side. It is possible to run the server side on Windows as well. Don't expect much if bandwidth is limited.
Multiple monitors == won't work. Holy crap, that's unbelievably lame. Guess I'll stick with the Slingbox.
@Hollywood, no it won't work outside of your home network.
I installed it on my desktop and ran in to the dual monitor issue, so I installed it on my laptop this morning. I am still waiting on an activation code. Cyberlink is the only company to run their web and mail server on a 9600 baud dial up modem!!!! ARG!!!! Where is the dern email? I wonder what DRM content they are trying to protect, I can watch my Blu-ray content in a window on my dual monitors! Go figure!
Download: slow.
Setup: simple. Took 40 seconds to install and worked first time (on a MBPro 17" 2.4Ghz Core 2 bootcamp with XP).
THIS THING IS USEFUL!!!
mule
I tried for a week, will not work on my wireless g laptop, or my dual core 3.0 desktop with new dx10 video card & wired network. Finds the dvr, lists the shows but when you try to play them, it sits for 5 seconds then always says can not find server, on either computer.
Its got tons of restrictions, might not work if you have 2 monitors, might have to disable your digital sound output,if thats your only method you will not have any sound, your system must pass hdcp tests or some videos wont work, some will.
Guess it still in beta, but it 0 for 2 on me.
