From what I can figure out, QFlix is just a branded DVD Download system, which isn't proprietary. DVD Download is a standard set by the DVD Forum for discs that allow you to burn CSS-encoded content onto them. The discs are playable in regular DVD players. QFlix is a service that allows you to download the content and burn it to a DVD Download DVD burner.
It solves the "How do you make downloads work for people who want to buy content without either eschewing DRM completely or else restricting people so they can't make permanent copies that play in existing players" issue. HD DVD's system was better, but HD DVD no longer exists.
