Apple iTunes content throwing HDCP flags on new MacBook / MacBook Pro
Man, you just can't win these days. So Apple offers up an energy-efficient, forward-thinking Mini DisplayPort on its latest MacBook / MacBook Pro, and now users that are still rocking displays sans HDCP-compliant HDMI / DVI ports are up fecal's creek without a paddle. Apparently select content in the iTunes Store is laced in HDCP, which isn't all that unexpected in and of itself; the problem comes in when you realize that the new unibody machines don't offer a VGA / VGA-to-component output, meaning that you have to connect it to an HDCP-compliant display if you want to see anything. We know, one word in particular keeps coming to mind to describe this fiasco: awesome.

DRM strikes again!
oh please, this isn't a big issue. The movie will obviously playback on the laptop itself.
and if you use displayport converter to play into virtually any HDMI enabled tv, you are fine.
also, the new apple monitors will play it fine, as will virtually any HDCP compliant monitor.
My bet is the new macworld convention in January will have a bunch of new monitors and hopefully tv capable ones. the reason why they are doing it is to have DRM on hollywood content, it is hollywood requiring it.
My big hope is apple starts blu-ray reading laptops and desktops in january.
But when Microsoft did this with Windows Vista, it was OMG DRM RAAAAAAAARGH!! Followed closely by gnashing of teeth and cursing and screaming...
It'll be interesting to see how the Apple fanboys react to this tomorrow.
Apple fanboys will simply say this is all a lie. :)
This is a big deal because if you hook this up to any Apple monitor, save the ones that were just released, using the displayport to DVI converter the movies will not play.Apple hardware to Apple hardware and it doesn't "just work".
Not cool Apple.
HP w2408h FTW!
a lot of the HP monitors are HDCP compliant
So first the new port forced people to buy adapters to get it working with their old monitor, and now the old monitor's don't work even with the adapter.
Is this Apple's plan to maintain growth through the recession? Genius!
I want to buy digital media, but it's the high price and all these "new" restrictions that constantly turn me off. If I buy digital media I want to know that I can easily watch it on any device I want in my home.
To use digital media, I don't want to have to commit to a particular technology or vendor that may no longer exist in the future.
three choices.
1. Buy Digital Media - have severe restrictions on how and where you can use it. Pay too much.
2. Pirate Digital Media - No restrictions, works with nearly everything. Studios don't get paid.
3. Do not use digital media.
Hollywood - We need a 4th option!
Those movies are SD with stereo sound. If HDCP is ruining the experience of SD video/audio, just get the damn DVD. What a mess!
HDCP is a nightmare. My PS3 has HDCP problems with my TV and sometimes I have to turn my receiver off and on to get a picture. Not as bad as this but still shitty!
Oh NO! Apple is starting to act like Microsoft...
Are you saying that they're turning on the HDCP flags for SD movies as well as the HD movies?
In the past, you couldn't even get HD movies from iTunes without a AppleTV. You'd just get the SD version.
Don't blame Apple. Blame the movie studios. They want to limit the way digital video is distributed. They don't want a casino hotel to have one digital (Blu-Ray for example) source, and distribute it to 1500 televisions throughout the place. Each display is supposed to have a license to play said video content. Apple is just complying with big brother.
I have seen this on the playground as well. A little kid (Apple) does something stupid and explains "but *he* told me to do it".
Seriously though, you pay arms and legs for a MacBook, you have been a good boy or girl and paid for your movies, and then Apple takes all the movies you bought as hostage and renders them almost useless, unless you buy some specific (TV-)product. On Windows, there are viruses which does this kind of hostage-taking a lot cheaper.
Guess I'll be happy with my old MacBook Pro for quite some time.
