They all had large high-def TVs, but were only using them to watch DVDs, as cable didn't seem worth the cost. I tried explaining to them that they should get a $20 antenna which would enable them to receive high-def broadcasts. They were interested but skeptical, and worried that this could be breaking the law. It seems like every time I go to someone's house that has an HDTV, they never have HD service, and typically are still being hooked up with composite cables. Would you try to buy a new VCR just to watch the few movies you have VHS that you just can't justify repurchasing? Like Hell I'm going to go out and buy "The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie" on blu-ray, let alone DVD. Actually I'm not sure where that one is; I might have to buy it on DVD if I ever want to watch that movie again. Who am I kidding! I'm not going to waste my money on that! But I still have "Men In Black," "The Perfect Storm," and "There's Something About Mary" on tape and I'm not sure I'll ever buy on DVD. And let's face it, the Wii doesn't really benefit from the component cable. The only reason I bought one was because MY TV DOESN'T HAVE ANY COMPOSITE INPUTS! But I'm over that. I have a VERY nice 20mbps connection from Verizon FIOS, and between what I can stream, download (legally), and Blu-Ray movies and games, I see absolutely NO NEED for pay tv at all! I can watch the occasional football game in HD via my Radio Shack set top antenna and everything else I get online. I love HD content, and usually will watch whatever I can get in HD, but I have a problem paying the INSANE cable rates these days. If I could get a GOOD HD package in the $30/month range (including taxes, box fees, etc) I may consider it, but at $70-$100 per month, NO THANKS!

John Nemesh

Comments on Many first-time HDTV buyers bypassing the HDTV service

This isn't surprising. A lot of people are turning away from cable and satellite and preferring to go a la carte.

I'm one of them.

My wife and I looked at our TV habits and looked at what we could get through OTA, TiVo & Netflix and what other options we have to get the shows we really want. Apple and the iTMS, via Apple TV, made the most sense to get the cable shows we want, so we threw that into the mix, too. If I really want to I can always find things via torrents (but that's a little less easy and I prefer easy when it comes to entertainment).

Frankly, I'm tired of Comcast (the only game in town for cable) constantly jacking the prices up and, no, I do not like to see a satellite dish on the roof (I've had DirecTV in the past). Currently we have no premium channels, HD service, one cable box, two CableCards in a TiVo Series3, and a cable modem and we are paying $130/month (before TiVo's fees). That's insane when we can go a la carte for much, much less a month. Sure, I lose the ability to check out a new show immediately, but Apple and TiVo (through Amazon) are pretty quick about picking up new shows... and once Netflix is streaming to my TiVo boxes that adds an entirely new dimension.

Alas, I still have to deal with Comcast for high speed net access... but that should change one of these days.

Geoffrey Sperl

Comments on Many first-time HDTV buyers bypassing the HDTV service

I'm just here for the ladies.

Sean

Comments on Many first-time HDTV buyers bypassing the HDTV service

DVDs do look much better on a modern HDTV than an old interlaced SD tube TV, so you don't have to have HD content to see a benefit. I do agree that a OTA antenna is a no-brainer addition for those without HD cable or sat.

The larger problem that I see here though is that, for the general public, TV is so much more complicated than it used to be: Digital vs Analog, HD vs SD, 1080p vs 1080i vs 720p vs 480p vs 480i, ATSC vs NTSC vs QAM, LCD vs Plasma vs RPTV, HDMI vs component vs svideo vs composite vs RF, DVD vs Blu Ray, a gazillion Blu Ray profiles and audio formats, stereo vs 5.1 vs 7.1, VCR vs DVD-R vs DVR, physical media vs streaming vs downloads, DRM up the wazoo that limits what we can do with our content (no HD equivalent to the good old VCR), ... just to name a few. How the heck is the average consumer supposed to keep up with all this? Nerds like us consider it a hobby and enjoy all the new tech, but I think it's overwhelming for others. Thus they buy a new TV, plug it into the devices/services that they already have, and leave it at that.

chumley

Comments on Many first-time HDTV buyers bypassing the HDTV service

What makes it even worse is that the retail people who are trusted by many as "in-the-know", usually don't know what the hell they're talking about. If a few of the stations come in HDTV (and a standard DVD looks terrible compared to WPBS 16.3 or other over-the-air HD), all the better, but more free channels and less interference are the main reasons for tinkering with antennae and all the rest.

I have no desire to have a cable company (or their government regulators) controlling what channels can be watched and I have no desire to pay a subscription for what is free over-the-air.

carlb

Comments on Many first-time HDTV buyers bypassing the HDTV service

It's funny, I work for a retailer in the HT Department and 50 percent of the individuals I speak with don't even understand what HDTV really is. They act like they know everything about the HD television, but do not purchase service to support their television. They later come back to the store complaining that their television doesn't look like the ones in the store. Most people don't even understand the difference between digital and HD. They are just happy that they have a flat panel and can tell their friend they have a HDTV. You wouldn't buy a sandwich with out the bread. Understand something, if a station is not broadcasting in HD, then you can't get it over the air. Your digital programming is not High Definition and High Definition is a service that you have to pay for from your local service provider (Comcast, Verizon, or Direct Television). Please, speak to your service providers and ask them about HD and the set top box you need for HD. I truly understand the elderly people not understanding this, but anyone over the age of 30 not understanding this doesn't need a HDTV. Stay with your tube television with the Bunny Ears. It's technology and things change!

Blove23

Comments on Many first-time HDTV buyers bypassing the HDTV service

You do not need a set top box to get HD. If your cable company offers HD in your area, all it takes is a channel scan on your QAM tuner TV with the cable connected directly to the TV. A standard cable box will BLOCK the HD channels. If cable in your area doesn't offer HD, you can get it with an antenna. Do a new scan periodically because cable is still adding channels and stations are still switching to HD or switching to different frequencies after Feb. 17 2009.

keith

Comments on Many first-time HDTV buyers bypassing the HDTV service

A lot of people believe that if you connect an HDTV to your standard cable, it'll all of a sudden "let the HD out" and they'll get HD picture. It's like they think the old TV was just preventing them from viewing HD that was already there.

I tried to explain to my 82 year old neighbor that she needed an HD box to go with her HDTV, and she looked at me like I was a freak. I am tired of technology and the speed of change companies make to market their goods to people. I want the clock turned back and would be fine with what few things have improved because of tech. Heck.. even though I feel totally against abortion..more Americans would have jobs today had 2..make that 3 fellas not been born and the subsequent changes that we don't need that have followed.. ie: PC's and the ongoing need to have classes in the lastest software, cell phones, ipods, satellite radios, gps navigation, remotes, and on and on.
