New Orleans, Louisiana's Prytania Theatre goes 4K
Not even three full years since getting itself back in business, The Prytania Theatre in New Orleans, Louisiana has apparently embraced the wonderful technology that is 4K. Still the only single screen cinema in the entire state, this landmark venue now has Sony 4K badges on its otherwise bare website, signifying that it is now ready to treat patrons to a high-resolution movie-going experience. 4K theaters are still relatively rare even in America, so we'd probably hop on down and see whatever's playing should you find yourself in N'awlins. Speaking of -- has anyone dropped in since the upgrade?

Gonna hove to pop in there and check it out... New Orleans is in my back yard! Finally we get something cool like this!
Yay, a projector with no native content!
Anything filmed on a Red One is 4k unless they film at 113 FPS at which point it goes to 2k because of the massive data rate associated with Redcode raw at such a high resolution and speed.
The Red One is not used by the major studios. Also, Hancock was the only 4K film released in the last year. To date I think there have only been 3 or 4 4K releases and only 3 currently planned for future release. Not surprisingly all of the 4K films are from Sony, the only company manufacturing these projectors for public exhibition.
also being 4k has nothing to do with sony, sony does have studios sure, but they do not make cameras (atleast not for the film industry, just prosumer cams)
Its amazing, the article doesnt mention sound, but they completely upgraded the theatre, sound and video. It is incredible.
Give it time
Several 4k movies will be unveiled in 2009 and beyond....Green Hornet, 2012, etc,etc...
Not only Sony, but also Warner Brothers has adopted 4K technology.
We will be reading alot of 4K news in the coming years.
Samsung, Pioneer, Panasonic are developing 4K Ultra Definition (UD) televisions.
The entertainment content in the form of a UDDVD will arrive in 3 to 5 years.
green hornet and the superman remake will be shot in new orleans as well :)
I recently saw Quantum of Solace at the Prytania. While I wasn't aware of their new equipment prior to entering, we were were repeatedly impressed by the high-level of detail, which we just attributed to an outstanding film transfer.
On a side note, the Prytania "looks the other way" with regard to bringing your own adult beverages into the theater. If you are of age, it is a great way to spend a weekday evening getting blasted.
For those that don't know, this theater is a local institution. Among many other things, it is a notable landmark from the great American novel "Confederacy of Dunces."
Gee, I wish we could get one of those fancy high tech 4k screens in Silicon Valley. 16 or more would be preferable.
all films can be transfered to 4k you know. they can go even higere to above 10k, films not limited like digital is. movie studios have been transfering many classics to digital as an extra back up, as well as new film archives of those films.
and the new projector looks awesome, as well as the prytania also got a new screen about a year ago
It seems like a wierd place for it, but I live in Salt Lake City, and I probably have 10 or so 4k theatres within about 20 miles of me. It might be more. A couple of the theatres I'm close to are consitently in the top 10, for box office take, at least a few times a year.
I don't even think about how great it looks anymore when I'm in a 4k theatre, but when I see film, it is usually annoying to watch for the first 10 minutes or so. It seems blurry, and the flicker of the frames can be distracting.
They've even had Halo 3 tournaments at one of the theatres. Wish I would have went to that!
weird for salt lake city or weird for new orleans?
if new orleans then heres a little history lesson. New orleans
housed the very first movie theatre, also we are number 3 in the
film production market right behind California and new york :)
