107,000 The Dark Knight Blu-ray Discs sold in UK on day one
We'll warn you -- these numbers are likely very preliminary and subject to change, but Pocket-lint is reporting (via Official Charts Company data as revealed by the British Video Association) that some 513,000 copies of The Dark Knight were sold on day one in the UK (but isn't the day still ongoing?), 21% of which were Blu-ray. If our abacus is to be trusted, that's just north of 107,000 Blu-ray Discs, and it falls right in line with the apparent BD boom going on across the pond. Just for comparison, it took the white hot Casino Royale a full week in the UK to move just 10,000 BD units. Looks like the flick is off to a solid start -- we'll be keenly watching for US numbers as soon as they become available.

I'll be picking up my BR copy today.

I think this is the first movie I've seen commercials just for the Blu-ray version. Amazon through in a nice little bonus: a download code comes with the Blu-ray to get their Unbox version.Watching it now until it comes in the mail!
"...Casino Royale a full week in the UK to move just 10,000 BD units"
That is a bit misleading.
How many people owned a Blue-ray player, when Casino Royale come out.
Sony sent me 3 copies of Casino Royal when I registered my PS3. Probably because I preregistered my PSN ID, registered online and sent in the registration card. Someone needs a course in eliminating duplicates from their mailing database.
how on earth is it misleading? i dont think anyone is trying to tout the success of an increased attachment rate, i think they're more touting the success of blu ray over the last year in general.
Even still, all things being equal, i dont think that they're are about TEN TIMES (10.7) as man blu ray players on the market now, call me crazy but it would be simple proportions...and they dont add up
Thats not such a good number when you consider how many ps3's have been sold in the UK.
100,000+ in one day isn't good because every person who owns a PS3 didn't run out and buy it on the first day it released? 10% buying it first day seems pretty good in my mind. Especially when you factor in that many of them probably asked for it as a gift, being so close to the holidays, rather than running out and buying it for themselves. Just a thought...
How Ps3's sold in the UK? I could only find a february figure which was 1,000,000. So going by that on day one 10% bought the BD. Not bad for day one! Just think about the rest of the week!
While I'll be picking up my copy today as well, EngadgetHD needs to stop treating The Dark Knight as the second coming of Christ.
One movie will not cause people to buy a Blu-ray player, but Blu-ray player owners will help drive the movie sales.
This movie is my main motivation for getting a Bluray player.
The Dark Knight did drive blu ray deck sales. I'm one of the ones who had to buy one on black friday so I could get the Dark Knight.
Not true. This is just the kind of movie that gets people off the fence and excited about an expensive new format.
Well I got the movie on DVD the day before and watched it, BUT later that day I was at COSTCO and they had the Panasonic DMP-BD35AK with a $80 instant rebate, so was selling for $199 and I think it lasts until the 13th. Well I got one. I wasn't planning on this soon, was going to wait, not like I'd use it much, Went and Got the new Batman at the Midnight Release at Best Buy, why not, I was awake and so I have it now on DVD and Blu-Ray. I've watched one Blu-Ray on it, but the BAD thing is now I have to rearrange my A/V hardware around and Reprogram my Harmony Remote for it. I plan to get a new Surround Sound receiver soon though with enough HDMI Inputs for everything I have which is at least 4. So I just wait for the Reprogram. I now have 4 Blu-Rays in less them 24 hrs though.
While it looks great, I still have no problem streaming and watching Netflix content.
Every format has a "definitive" title. LaserDisc had BladeRunner. It seemed like almost every LaserDisc enthusiast owned BladeRunner, and brought it out to show off their LaserDisc player to visitors. DVD had The Matrix. I can't tell you how many times I saw The Matrix because someone just bought their first DVD player or surround sound system, and bought The Matrix as their first experience of the technology. The Dark Knight looks like it may become Blu-Ray's equivalent to DVD's The Matrix and LaserDisc's BladeRunner.
The Dark Knight is better then the second coming of Christ.
I do also know some people who are buying players because of this release, so I think you're wrong on both points. ; )
5 of my friends are getting a ps3 or a bluray player just because of this movie. And plenty more who will buy the bluray which will be their first bluray pickup
I just bought my BR of Dark Knight hell there was a crap load of people in best buy and it seems the BR version was the one selling.
I could believe this I got mine today from play.com i pre-ordered it just after i saw the film on imax. Darknight has been a very cheap new release i paid £14.99 normally you would be paying £17.99 and yes we do get conned in the UK.
I got mine for £13.44 from The Hut
(if you look out for them they sometimes do a luchtime special offer & take an extra 10% off - I got the Blu-ray steelbook of Wanted for the same price & the new Rush Blu-ray for £9).
Result......well, for a new release price it is.
I wonder how they calculate that kind of number?
What happens to all the pre-orders & early deliveries?
I got mine last week, worth the fuss?
Hmmmmm.
We'll see.
Might watch it tonight but maybe we'll have the Foo Fighters at Wembley instead.
Had the Foo Fighters, at Wembley in June, instead.
Superb show & the 24bit 48kHz audio gave the HD receiver a good work-out.
Page & Jones guesting was just glorious.
Maybe get around to TDK at the weekend.
Anyone know where I can pick up a BD copy of DK for $10??? Ok, I'll just wait then...paid too much to see this for me and wife in movie theater.
How many months till we can talk about a different movie pushing BD sales? Next Christmas the new Star Trek should be coming out on BD...how many trekers buy a $80 BD player just to watch it in HD?
I'm with you, I can wait for the price to get under $15, I already saw it at the IMAX (but I got my ticket for $2). I'm a bargain hunter though.
As for hot titles coming up next year:
New Harry Potter
New Terminator (with Bale, could be good)
Wolverine
Watchmen could be a big nerd movie, but I doubt it hits the masses
Transformers 2
Of course, none of this hit till spring so the winter will be dull as usual.
