OPPO BDP-83 Blu-Ray Disc Player Update
Dear [customer],
Thank you for signing up to receive information about our upcoming OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player. We appreciate your interest, and would like to update you on the current development status of this exciting new product.
One of the major design goals for the BDP-83 is to deliver first-class video quality for both Blu-ray and DVD. We based and expanded upon our top-of-the-line DV-983H up-converting DVD player and fully utilize the unparalleled performance of the VRS by Anchor Bay video processing solution. You can expect all the high-end video features including Source Direct for DVD and Blu-ray, high definition HDMI scaling, Edge and Detail Enhancement options, and 1080p24Hz output for both Blu-ray and DVD.
We did not stop at just video performance. We further refined the audio stage, including the addition of discrete stereo outputs and increasing the power and efficiency of the power supply. For SACD playback, the BDP-83 supports direct DSD over HDMI and DSD-to-analog without any PCM conversion, a very unique feature.
With the BDP-83, we intend to release a full-featured universal Blu-ray Disc player that supports BD Profile 2.0 (BD-Live), DVD, SACD, DVD-Audio, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master Audio. As of this writing, the BDP-83 supports BD Profile 1.1 (BONUSVIEW), DVD-Video, SACD, and bitstreaming of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Progress is being made on a daily basis as our engineers work diligently around the clock to further enable DVD-Audio, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio onboard decoding, and BD Profile 2.0.
The BDP-83 is currently undergoing an extensive and thorough Beta Test Program. We greatly appreciate all the feedback from our beta testers, as without their hard work and extraordinary attention to detail, the BDP-83 would not be the high quality product that our customers have come to expect from us.
As many of our customers eagerly anticipate the release of the BDP83, we are contemplating a "BDP-83 Early Adoption Program" in late December or early January. This program will make available a limited number of units so you can purchase and experience the current implementation of the BDP-83's feature set, with the ability to download firmware as new features become available. The estimated price for the BDP-83 is around $499 to $599.
OPPO Digital is a consumer-oriented company that listens carefully to customer opinions and values their feedback. If it were not for our customers' feedback and support, OPPO would not be where we are today. At OPPO we strive to provide our customers with quality products reinforced by exceptional customer service.
Please email to BDP-83@oppodigital.com if you have any questions and comments, or simply reply to this email.
Best Regards,
Customer Service

DROOL......
I knew today was going to be a good day!
Drool seconded.
Now to figure out which bank I'm going to have to rob to afford this. Because I have to have it, even if it requires a felony.
TJ, watch out for bank robbers wearing makeup. They'll shoot you in your back once your job is finished.
Probably the first Blu-ray player worth its price?
Netflix streaming would be a neat addition as it has made its way into other Blu-ray players out there currently.
I'd say about $399 should be it's MSRP but that's just my opinion.
If they can offer all this performance for $500 - $600, why is the Denon so expensive.
I guess their internal components are hand made by midgets living in the north pole. And for every Denon product made they have to sacrifice a baby to Home theater Gods.
We need more companies like oppo. I would like to see them create a receiver and speaker system. Excellent quality, dirty cheap price.
There are more companies like Oppo, you just have to search to find them. One I can think off of the top of my head is Outlaw Audio, who makes amps, pre-amp, receivers and I think just recently branched out into speakers. I have come across a few companies that all they do is amps and they are more affordable then their high-end name brand counter parts. I would also maybe consider companies like Paradigm, PSB, Energy, Axiom, etc... to be companies like Oppo, they all have great speakers at affordable prices.

Other companies besided Outlaw are Emotive amps/speakers, AV123 speakers, and of course the subwoofer specialists SVS, Hsu, and Epik... One recent review of SVS vs similarly priced Velodyne subs revealed that the SVS woofer with a 10" cone has a magnet/motor structure that is almost 3 times the size of a 12" cone from Velodyne that is at the same price class... Of course it won the comparison performance tests hands down...
Zargon, you can say that again!
"There's nothing wrong with preferring to buy made-in-the-USA goods"
No, it's just irrational. And if your irrational decision ends up you paying more for the exact same item, you're actually hurting the economy by being an inefficient consumer.
"No, it's just irrational. And if your irrational decision ends up you paying more for the exact same item, you're actually hurting the economy by being an inefficient consumer."
Irrational says you. Everyone has their own motivations for buying what they buy. It's perfectly rational to choose out of principle to purchase something made in the USA, whether that's to support the local economy, for potentially better quality, or some other reason.
How could someone end up paying more for "the exact same item"? If it's made in the USA, and another product is made in China, it's NOT the same item.
Jeebus said: "No, it's just irrational. And if your irrational decision ends up you paying more for the exact same item, you're actually hurting the economy by being an inefficient consumer."
And based on that statement the most efficient life is one that ends right away with use of the least resources?
Efficiency is maybe not the best way to rate human actions.
And you maybe didn't even notice his underlying motive, or you did but played ignorant?
That doesn't seem very efficient either, So who was the irrational one again?
Oppo reminds me of Slim Devices (the makers of Squeezebox) - before they sold themselves to Logitech. My Squeezebox 3 was built right here in the USA and the quality is excellent.
I have never owned an Oppo, but might own their BD player one day. I have a PS3 now, but who knows how long that is going to last. I am not a gamer - so I don't have any gaming loss!
Is the Oppo player made in the US or in China? I know they are an American company.
Dude don't you know. The United States is owned by China. We borrowed so much money from these people it would be impossible to payback.
I don't think Made in the USA exist anymore. Everything is made in Asia or Mexico.
Ah, man... I want to cry, my country has gone to the dogs.
They are Chinese, and why do you care where it's made?
What state are you from? Does it have to be made in your home state too? Or perhaps even your county? Or city? Yeah, probably city. You won't buy anything made in another city. Keep the local economy strong, right? Wait... why stop there? In fact, don't buy anything made outside your own home. Support your own home!
Jeebus, don't be stupid. There's nothing wrong with preferring to buy made-in-the-USA goods.
In general on electronics, American build quality > Chinese build quality. The Chinese are the ones that lowered solder quality to what it is today.
You said you've never had an Oppo. I've had a Sampo all-region DVD player and replaced it with an Oppo, the Oppo is one if not the only
SACD players on the market that does 5.1 over the HDMI cable for SACD/DVD-A discs. I'm very happy with the product.
The packaging was beautiful and elaborate, so much care taken I would have thought I had just received something from Japan.
Silk slip-case, etc.
DivX? Netflix?
Not sure about Netflix, but even the low-end DVD players that Oppo puts out all do DivX. I'd be shocked if they removed it now.
As for region free stuff, I wouldn't be surprised to see a "modified" firmware leaked out shortly after launch that disables region-lock. Just like on one of Oppo's older upconverting-DVD players that I bought for my parents (forget the model), it took me about 5 minutes to find and install modfiied firmware that allows upconverting over component.
Just one more thing to love about these guys :)
Anybody know if it will also offer multi-region DVD support like the Opp DVD players?
It's a no-buy if they don't.
mkv?
Solid player. I love it.
I've only owned one Oppo product for a short time but look forward to this player. I imagine when you are a small company that is driven by customer feedback, you aren't paying ungodly sums of money for marketing and distribution and you work closely with companies like Anchor Bay Technology (just down the road from Oppo) Good things can happen to good people. It's nice to see their aesthetic design has matured as well.
1.Region-free blu-ray??
2.Backlit Remote??
3.Modernised user display interface??
I'm pretty sure that region-free BD playback is prohibited in the Blu-ray spec.
I know WB blu-rays are region-free
This Ultimate Universal Player by Oppo looks like a winner.
Great for Blu-ray , standard DVD's , Red Book CD's, SACDs and DVD audio.
Sign me up.
i want this player so bad, but i'm torn between this and something that will stream netflix HD. am i asking too much? Do we know if this player will have the underlying tech to support netflix streaming via a potential firmware update in the future? (if it has BD2.0, i'd guess yes) Throw in Netflix HD and there would no competition with this bad boy.
For SD DVD players, does anyone know if Oppo players have better video quality than Denon players (with or without the HQV chips).
I know that Denon's picture has more depth than the other brands (e.g. Sony, Pioneer) but I've never tried an Oppo before. Does an Oppo have the same picture depth as a Denon?
>>Not sure about Netflix, but even the low-end DVD players that Oppo puts out all do DivX. I'd be shocked if they removed it now.
I was hoping this would be my replacement for my current DVD player and my Panasonic BD, but I also do not see Netflix or divx list or even AVCHD support.
But as someone commented above that DVD players oppo puts out support divx. My question to oppo dvd owners is, does it support xvid as well? Since my current DVD player supports both xvid and divx
What I was hoping to see in this Oppo BD player was:
- NetFlix streaming support
- HD divx and xvid support (1080p mpeg4)
- AVCHD support
- MKV 1080p H.264 support
Currently I can take MKV 720p tv shows from torrent and play on my Panasonic after converting from MKV to m2ts wrapper and burning to a DVD in the blu-ray format. Also have been able to get 1080p HD apple movie trailers to play on Panny after some tricky conversion.
And I hear the upcoming Panasonics will be supporting HD divx. Not sure about divx. I think will know more around CES time.
So I was hoping the oppo BD player would be my replace all, but its not looking great and for that price tag I will hold out for something better on the horizon.
Very interesting Jeff.
I would expect (or just hope) that they would continue full support for all major codecs, for a broad array of resolutions and bitrates, such that I can plug most media in there and have it play.
Plus, I would really hope that these advanced scalers/processors would be usable for these formats to get more out of them.
Is this too much to expect? Because otherwise I'll keep my $600 and add a $100 BD-drive to my HTPC.
Yay, DVD-A support! Victory dance time...
But price is a smidgen high...I might be waiting for the second gen for my Oppo blu-ray goodness.
Oppo is my next player.. Allready ordered one.
My current one - a Panasonic BD-55 - is heading for the bedroom.
Sorry to burst the bubble for those of you hoping for region-free DVD (or BD) playback:

This unfortunately rules out the BD-83 for me and many others; as it would appear Oppo has caved on demands by the Blu-Ray Disc Association (BDA) ;(
Finally, a true universal disc player that plays Blu-Ray discs!! This is the animal I have been waiting for since Blu-Ray beat out HD-DVD!! I wish I had waited to buy this deck instead of my upgrading Pioneer DV-58 DVD player last that I bought last April. A very good deck in its own right mind you, but not capable of playing Blu-Ray discs. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to sell and upgrade! This may very well be the final "piece of the puzzle" that sets Blue-Ray sales skyrocketing.
