SlySoft moving to subscription-based upgrade model

It was nice to purchase SlySoft's AnyDVD HD once and let the gurus in Antigua continually re-break whatever DRM Hollywood chose to throw out, wasn't it? After this year, you can kiss that luxury goodbye -- that is, if you continue to sit on the sidelines. SlySoft has just announced that starting on January 1, 2009, it will "change its update policy from free lifetime updates to an annual subscription fee." The good news? Anyone who buys a SlySoft product before that day will not be affected by the change. In other words, you've still got a few weeks to decide whether or not you want to join the Blu-ray backup crowd, and to make your decision easier, the outfit is offering a 20% discount on all software products (save for upgrades) through December 31st.
The exchange rate should be a little better than the last time I thought about buying it.
Translation - too many people were pirating our software.

I still can't justify the risk of purchasing this software since I live in the US. I understand the Fair Use policy, but what about the part of the DMCA that states you can break copy protection. Doesn't purchasing software that breaks copy protection put me on a list somewhere that could be subpoenaed down the road? I'm all for the Fair Use policy, but I can't justify the risk to buy the software that break copy protection. Am I crazy?

I purchased anydvd about 2 years ago and the anydvd hd upgrade in March 2008. Now I don't even use it. I have given up completly on the HTPC stuff. Too much work to get it to work correctly and I'm getting old.
I no longer have patience for something that works today and don't work tomorrow (some bluray movies play, some don't play at all, some pay screwey.)
I got a standalone panny bluray player (it just works, and works, and works).
For Netflx, I got my 360. For TV/dvr, my fios hd dvr takes care of that. And to tie everything together, I use my Harmony remote.
HTPC -- nothing but a pipe dream.

this program is useful if you use import DVD and blu-ray a lot. for dvd, yes it is useful so long as the drive you own is not panasonic. I am glad I bought this, though I use this program mainly not to break the copy protection or ripping.
I am one of blu-ray early adopter, and sometimes, it does help when the BD is unplayable. Turn the AnyDVD on, and you got your BD playing
I suggest you buy it now if you haven't got it.
it cost me $39.46USD with my check card, but my bank also added a 2% foreign exchange rate charge, those bastards...
I use it just to disable HDCP. Sure my second monitor that I bought had HDCP built in. But with only one DVI port, and my TiVo HD has to use HDCP, and two VGA ports, I'd rather not have to rewire it when I want to watch a Blu-ray movie. Works every time.
