Onkyo intros high-end 7.1-channel PR-SC886 preamplifier-processor
Only the affluent or those willing to blow some serious pounds on their home theater setup need apply here, as Onkyo's top-notch PR-SC886 isn't for the average amateur. The new flagship device is a THX Ultra2 Plus-certified AV preamplifier-processor which decodes every single HD audio format and includes an ISF video calibration function, HDMI upscaling to 1080p via the HQV Reon-VX processor and Burr-Brown 192kHz / 24-bit audio DACs for all channels. Furthermore, you'll find a trio of TI Aureus 32-bit DSP chips, iPod compatibility, 2-channel balanced XLR inputs, 7.1-channel line-level XLR pre-outs, network support and a pre-programmed learning remote. After digesting all of that, surely you won't be shocked and appalled by the £1,500 ($2,246) price tag. Surely.

Sounds great, now I just need someone to buy me one and I'll be ready to go!
This is a processor,not a reciever.
I think the words "processor" and "receiver", in this case, can used interchangeably, because this definitely looks and has the feature set of a receiver but does as well have the features of a processor.
Receivers do both the amplification and processing while processors just do the latter.
Can you recommend a good amplifier for this processor? Which amplifier would you use?
It's cousin, the Integra DHC 9.9, is almost a $100 cheaper while carrying the same specs.
Do you think that the Integra DHC 9.9 is better? How is it better?
Usually Integra units come with longer warranties and better customer support.
That price is full retail, you'll be able to find it for more than $100 less. Given all those specs, the price is pretty good actually. People pay a lot more for a lot less.
Here's a good review of the previous model, the PR-SC885:

Does any one know of a good amp (e.g. Anthem, Arcam) I can use with this Onkyo PR-SC886 preamp/processor?

Very nice, but how many people would pay $2,000 for an a/v receiver? I'm looking for a good quality receiver that does HDMI switching and 1080p upconversion, Compared to the $2,000 Onkyo, what am I giving up by buying this Denon AV9-1909 that I found for $449.25 on TechDealDigger? http://www.techdealdigger.com/deals/denon-avr1909-449-at-sixth-ave-electronics/5635
You can't possibly compare that Denon or any other one at that price to a 2k a/v. But, if you've never heard it or don't have the speakers to benefit from it then you'll never know the difference. Yet, you don't have to spend 2k on a 2k a/v due to the internet.
To classify as a "receiver", the unit must contain a tuner. Otherwise, if it contains a pre-amp, processor and amplifier but no tuner, it is called an "integrated amplifier", or integrated home-theater amplifier. I don't recall seeing any such devices.
From the specs they have listed, it doesn't even have amplification, plus it says right in the text that it is a processor. The title is wrong.
Wow, look at those specs and that price.
Damn, but the Onkyo 87* & 90* series receivers are incredible value & quality kit.
With no amplification built in, why is it so damn huge?

Take a look at the back panel, it has to be that big just to have all the required hookups.
Someone please recommend me a good amplifier for this thing!
