iiNet, which is based in Western Australia, has reportedly achieved download speeds topping out at 85Mbps and upload rates of around 47Mbps in field trials held in Perth. The live VDSL2
trials are being used to determine the feasibility of eventually wiring up multi-dwelling units with an array of services. In theory, the service could bring high-speed internet, digital phone and HDTV to apartment complexes via a single wire, much like AT&T's
U-verse and Verizon's
FiOS suites in America. Regrettably, there's no mention of when this will move beyond the testing phase and into the for sale stage, but as always, here's hoping for the answer to be sooner rather than later.
Its painful for us Aussies to even be presented with news like this given the slow nature of our broadband development. So yeah, it's good news, but it'll be ages before I can get a decent service like this or even ADSL2+ in my area (which is the same for most areas of oz).
HDTV would be a great idea.
Maybe most 'areas' due to the huge land mass, but not most (=number) of the popluation, considering 93% live in a capital city, most number of people (majority) have access to a decent speed of service.
Telstra is now pushing forward with their 100Mbit Cable service on their existing HFC network (which has just been announced from CEO Sol Trijillo) with an upgrade to Docsis 3.0, now that's something to look forward to if you live in a one of the cap cities :-)
Yea, they'll be able to hit those ridiculously low download caps withing minutes soon.
Yeah agree on the low data caps with Telstra, but there are heaps of other ADSL2+ providers in the cap city areas, hell you can get 150Gb for $69.99 with TPG, that's not that bad!!
