I still don't get it. Why would anyone buy a 52" LCD for MORE than a 50" plasma AND pay more for it AND not look as good as the plasma? Come on now, someone give me an answer here because the fall of the 50" plasmas has me confused.
Not gonna tell you that its right or wrong for people to think like this but all you have to do is walk in to a BestBuy to know why. Almost every LCD will have the brightness turned up. This makes them look better in a well lit area.
Well lit areas also mean that the fading blacks are not seen as much. Since bright rooms are where most people have televisions at home its not that big of a deal. The better contrast due to the deeper blacks on plasma are just not very evident to most people.
The viewing angle advantage that plasma once had is all but gone.
The response rate that plasma once had is all but gone.
The price advantage at 52 inches has basically disappeared.
On top of all of that, LCD tends to have the resolution advantage and uses less power on the same size set.
Finally you have two other "issues" with plasma. I do not consider these problems but joe-6-pack does. Plasmas suffer from screen burn-in and they fade twice as fast as LCD. Many plasmas are rated at 30,000 hours to half brightness while almost all LCDs are rated at 60,000 hours.
“An engineer explained to us that hundreds of ear impressions were gathered in the name of research, and while each one obviously boasted its own unique shape and size, one single characteristic remained uniform across the board: the entrance into the ear canal is not a perfect circle, it's an oval.”
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
