I have a huge collection of CDs that just sit on the shelves collecting dust now that the vast majority of my library is ripped. Why would I want to go back to disc media when we have the convince of digital audio files on our computers and portable devices. My MacBook Pro can output 24 bit / 96 kHz over the built-in optical output and it's supposed to do 24/192 but nobody have been able to set it as such. I don't know that I could really tell the difference between 24/96 or 24/176 anyway, unless of course I had $100K in audio equipment. You can download "HD" audio tracks at 24/96 and even 24/192, though the selection is quite limited at this time. Moving files around on my computer, iPod, to my PS3 via DLNA is just far too convenient to go back to a disc based format.

Todd

Comments on PS Audio debuting world's first HRx disc player at CES

Wait a minute...you have all your files ripped, but you're outputting them at 24/96 and you'd like to output them at 24/192? Ummm...why? The native CD bitrate is 16/44, and your ripped music is surely not higher quality than the original CD. Otherwise your point seems to be that there's not a lot of higher-def music out there, and you probably couldn't hear the difference anyway.

Ubertrout

Comments on PS Audio debuting world's first HRx disc player at CES

wont last.

hey hey

Comments on PS Audio debuting world's first HRx disc player at CES

I'm guessing you didn't read the article. Seeing how engadget rarely knows how to write an accurate summery, you should probably read the link. This, combined with the I2S DAC interface will probably be the best sounding CD\MP3\FLAC\etc. player ever made regardless of price.

RTFA

Comments on PS Audio debuting world's first HRx disc player at CES

Thanks RTFA. Yeah, you get it. But let's go easy on folks, there's a lot going on in this device that simply isn't available anywhere else and the significance of the device - with its I2S interface, Digital Lens to eliminate jitter and relatively low cost is perhaps more significant to Audiophiles than computer guys.

Still, there will be many who have taken the time to audition the difference between what they have and what is possible. Even on a mediocre audio setup, this transport DAC combo is pretty stunning. I have taken it to many parts of the world to show it off to people on some pretty bad systems and it doesn't take long for people to figure out this is indeed something special.

But it's certainly not for everyone. We'll post more info on the PS website www.psaudio.com within a week or so. Right now we're scrambling to get to CES in Vegas :)

Thanks for chiming in!

paulmc

Comments on PS Audio debuting world's first HRx disc player at CES

Thanks for the comments guys. Maybe a couple of my own here since I am one of the designers of this equipment.

You can absolutely play HRx discs on a computer, however, getting them out of the computer is not easy and this device makes it brainless. But let's be honest, there are only about 10 discs (at present) so taken on its own, this isn't that big a deal. What is big are three things: the elimination of the computer, reading WAV files (or any file format) on a DVD or CD, and the DAC itself.

For some, having a computer as our music source is just fine; for many it isn't. I am in the latter camp. Computers have their place but I don't really like the interface or hassle of having to have this in my living room to play music. Personal choice.

The ability to make compilations of lossless collections on a larger data storage optical medium (DVD) is a pretty big deal for me. I can share, I can place 10 times the music on a single disc and play it back without any loss. For instance, I recently acquired the entire KBCO Studio C library which is 14 gB. I can put the entire library on two DVD's rather than many CD's. Yes, I understand you can place everything on your hard disc, and that's cool if you have a computer - so that's the next point.

The new PWD is a high end DAC that you can use to connect to any DLNA compliant hard drive or computer either wireless or wired and stream any resolution audio to it. While not unheard of, it's a really big deal for those of us into quality high end audio. The difference between this DAC's audio output and that of a computer's DA converter, or even a reasonable off-the-shelf one is pretty significant - and no, you don't require $100K system to appreciate it.

Anyway, the transport isn't for everyone - the DAC might be a bigger deal serving as a high-end music player - but both are pretty cool devices.

Paul

paul mcgowan
