Why are most iPhone remote apps so janky?
The iPhone has plenty of great applications but for whatever reason whenever one comes out -- like the new TiVoRemote pictured above -- that will help us control our home theater it looks as bad as you can imagine. Sure function is more important than form, but most of these are ridiculous. It's bad enough that the developers think you want to use a touch screen to control something like a directional pad -- imagine looking up to see the menu on the screen and then down to look at the remote 25 times -- but at least they could make it look cool. It's not that we hate all of 'em as the Apple Remote for the Apple TV and iTunes is really slick, but with all the possibilities when it comes to gestures and the iPhone's accelerometer, we'd think there'd be a decent solution by now.

Hahah I bet this guy loves that you trashed his app.
Trying to make a quick buck for as little work as possible? Wonder if it pays off.
This app isn't in the APP Store right?
Maybe the developer didn't use the SDK with the UI Designer for decent interface.
Or maybe he didn't want to get sued by Tivo for putting an image of the Remote on-screen.
Seriously - my slingbox player software has a visual of the Tivo Remote with big Tivo Inc copyright on the bottom.
I'd love to have this app without jailbreaking my phone - no matter what it looks like. Bring it!
My mistake for not reading fully...this app is in the APP STORE. It looked similar to one I just saw a few days ago that required a jailbroken phone. SWEET! And disregard that part of my comment, while I walk away in shame and spend $0.99. Thank You.
You realize that skinning all the buttons is not as simple as dragging and dropping. That's what buttons look like in Interface Builder. You have to specify the image's inactive and active states, the offsets to help stretch out the image appropriately, and prep a couple other things.
The code isn't that complex but it needs to be done for each button. Maybe you should educate yourself on how it works before knocking it?
Did I knock it?
I don't think so.
I bought it.
Don't be so defensive and self-imporant, unless you're the developer that wrote it, in which case I'd like a refund.
"Maybe the developer didn't use the SDK with the UI Designer for decent interface."
I think that speaks for itself.
I thought you were reading way too much into my post, but then I read this link: http://www.engadgethd.com/profile/1538255/ and realized it is just your general attitude toward everything that is the problem. You should really try and lighten up.
Yours do too... Click your name and re-read through a few of them.
Then try to lighten up.
I don't know what you mean by "janky," but I've downloaded more apps than I should have, ane all them work extremely on all my audio, video and computer components. Maybe you just got very unlucky; maybe your iPhone/iPod Touch is broken. Or maybe you simply don't know what you're doing.
