Netflix and Walmart sued over online movie rentals
Industry big shots Walmart and Netflix have both been named in a consumer lawsuit which accuses them of "trying to build a monopoly for online DVD rentals." The complaint, which was filed by San Francisco-based Andrea Resnick in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges that both firms "unreasonably restrained trade, sending up prices." As the story goes, the duo decided back in 2005 that Wally World would shut down its online rental business and refer those customers to Netflix, and the plaintiffs allege that these actions would end up promoting Walmart's DVD movie sales. Netflix spokespeople declined to comment, though Walmart spokeswoman Daphne Moore did acknowledge that it had received the gripe and would respond to the court at the appropriate time.

Wal-Mart had online DVD rentals?
same thing I said........
Yes they did. And it was as good and pleasant as going into one of their stores. In the mail-in video rental market, Netflix is king. Blockbuster gets a lucky second because there's no one else. Walmart tried, but it was awful and it made Blockbuster look good.
Wally World heads had a meeting with Netflix CEO. They exchanged business cards. Next thing we knew, Wally World was no longer renting movies through the mail. I can't believe it was that long ago. But, I think when Netflix decided to sue Blockbuster, Wally World peed in its pants and decided to "chat" with King Netflix.
Seriously???
Last I checked there were OTHER options for Renting movies online.......such as Blockbuster, Amazon, Etc....
you arent FORCED to rent movies online eeither.......PLENTY of places to rent movies IN STORE....
some people just try 2 get money for anything.......
This is one of those lawsuits that should have never happened, but with a few notable exceptions, the FTC has been all but asleep at the wheel for the last eight years, resulting in suits like this. I doubt that it will amount to anything more than forcing the FTC to at least pretend like they're paying attention.
Now the suit itself isn't about "renting movies online" it's about "online DVD rental" and how Wal-Mart folded their operation and in turn drive business to Netflix. If they sold their online dvd rental business to Netflix then that would be fine, if not then it should be subject to some scrutiny.
Poor little Walmart Netflix lawsuit, he's picked on at work by the bigger lawsuits. Second hand smoke, microsoft, mesothelioma ... He cowers in the corner at the office as they point and laugh. He's a gamer though, he won't give up. His mom says he's cool. Go lawsuit go.
That's America these days. File a lawsuit and gun for settlement.
"Walmart and Netflix have both been named in a consumer lawsuit which accuses them of trying to build a monopoly for online DVD rentals."
Two companies? Monopoly? Does not compute.
So try reading the actual text instead of just the headline. The point is that ... well, just read the text, it will tell you!
So this suit alleges that Netflix colluded to encourage people to PURCHASE DVDS? From WALMART??
Does not compute.
Worthless lawsuit. There are competitors in this arena. The allegations of collusion are a waste...
Stupid SanFran Hippie probably thinks that everything is business should be fair and equal.
From the story... "The agreement enabled Netflix to maintain monopoly power and led rival Blockbuster Inc (BBI.N) to raise subscription rental prices..."
Monopoly and a big competitor in the same sentence... lame.
I hate netflix they have me waitng 10 days for any bluray disc I put in my "Q"
Driving up prices? Puh-leeze! Netflix isn't even turning a profit on users utilizing the streaming function! Netflix even stated they were only doing the streaming media because if they didn't do it, someone else would. Their profits on DVD rentals are minimal.
