I'm a Best Buy Home Theater guy who actually researches a lot of the product in the store, and have only one conclusion:
Plasma. On the surface LCD looks shiny and bright, but when you really compare them to a good plasma set, colour and contrast really win out. With companies plying 'dynamic contrast ration' and the like, plasma can handle contrast ratio with it's eye's closed. It's only with the newer LED local dimming technology that LCDs can show a black level comparable to that of plasma, but this is either an all or nothing technology. you can't show it all at once like on a plasma. You either have blacks or a dark grey.
Longevity and burn in is no longer a sticking point. If you stick with a name brand like Panny or Samsung, you'll have a tv that will last 20 years at 8 hours a day while playing Halo or Resistance without a hint of burn in.
If you watch your tv in a room with lamps (like most people), you will see the glare on the plasma screen... But you wont see it on an LCD screen. Plasma screens already look dated in my opinion.

LCD wash out HORRIBLY with a lamp "reflected" off the screen!!
Yes I have both and the plasma shows a point reflection just like your old CRT.. a pain but if you move position of yourself or the lamp it can be avoided... However with a LCD screen any bright source including a window can wash over significant areas of the matte screen killing all contrast,etc...
IMHO this reflection effect in lcd is much worse than in plasma...
Plus an added benefit from plasma is the SUNTAN you get when you pass by :P
I appreciate educated people!
