We already knew of the FMJ AVR600 courtesy of a
telling Dolby Volume release, but now
Arcam has come forward with the full details on this monolithic creature. Wrapped in a sleek, subtle but altogether intimidating enclosure, the AVR600 houses a "huge toroidal power transformer and high efficiency class G amplifiers" that deliver 120-watts per channel. There's also internal decoding of DTS-HD Master, DTS High Resolution, Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus formats, and the 5 HDMI inputs / 2 outputs should keep you busy buying new components. I don't like silver coloured equipment but this is an exception to that rule.
That thing in either color looks pretty ugly to me. Besides my new Receiver also has 5 HDMI Inputs, though only one HDMI Output. That's all I need and supports all the newest features. No need for this thing. It just doesn't sound all that impressive.
what sounds impressive will be the... uhm... sound. The typical ARCAM sound usually is amazing.
I've owned an Arcam receiver from this line before and it's very impressive for sound quality. This is probably going to retail well into the $5K mark as the FMJ line is rather high-end. I don't know if I'd pay the money for it.
What does an amp really do for sound quality besides provide sufficient power to your speakers? Blind A/B/X testing has failed the more money = better sound paradigm in amps.
But sicne this thing is a receiver it'll pack some nice DACs which will improve sound. But I'm not sure you need an Arcam FMJ to get that. If you have the money it should rock!
