I've had an excellent experience with my 500 GB Apricorn DVR expander. There was some trouble with the case about six months after I bought it, but their customer service took care of it.
The aesthetics may not be great, but the drive and fan seem silent from eight feet away. I did take a tiny bit of electrical tape and cover up 80% of the red power LED to get it down to a more reasonable brightness when watching TV in low or no light. Other then that I've been quite happy with my DVR expander.
Getting hours and hours more space for my old SA 8300 box and then for my Tivo S3 was well worth the cost.
