Star Trek: TOS & Star Trek The Motion Picture Trilogy Blu-ray boxes decloak in Norway
Rumors that Paramount was planning a Blu-ray release of the remastered Star Trek: The Original Series coinciding with the new movie this spring just got a lot stronger, with box art pictures for season one and a Star Trek: The Motion Picture trilogy consisting of the first three movies popping up today on Release.no. Through the magic of Google Translate we know these are due in Norway May 13 (along with Star Trek II, III, IV & VI in standalone editions on BD & DVD) and it's not unreasonable to assume they'll hit U.S. shelves around the same time. Of course, if you can't wait until then, or at least for some more official info from Paramount, we're sure there's an HD DVD player and boxed set in a bargain bin somewhere just waiting to be picked up.

bargain bin at fry's they push hd-dvd like it's the hot technology.
Crap, this will be a must purchase so there goes at least $125.
I'm noting a distinct lack of Star Trek V in that list.
Not that I'm complaining.
"What does God need with a starship" indeed...
I know I'm in the minority, but that was NOT a bad movie -- at its core. The novelization was much better than the movie itself because the novel dealt with a lot of personality, emotional, and - yes - spiritual issues that were not translated well into the movie. Of course, the fact that ILM was not available to do the special effects didn't help at all. (God! I hope that special effects company went belly up...) And we all know the stories about budget and time issues during filming.
Walking out of the theater I recognized it as a movie that had potential that simply didn't make it on the screen. A lot of people that I know who read the novelization agree with that.
Personally, I wish that Shatner was given the same courtesy as others to go back and "fix" Start Trek 5 to what it was supposed to be. I'd love to see it in its "intended" state.
@John B
Yeah, its not a BAD movie, but it just left such a bad taste compared to the "trilogy" that came before it, and then with VI after it, it just stands out as a black sheep.
But if Paramount releases individual movies here, It would probably be the second to last I pick up of the 10 films (because I'll only buy Nemesis last, and only because my inner collector demands it.)
That movie wasn't bad in the same sense that the new indiana jones movie wasn't bad. On it's own it'd be a decent B movie to stick on late night sci fi, but to put star trek in there... eww. II III IV and VI would be an excellent box set. I'd jizm my pants if paramount actually does that instead of making us pay for I and V along with the good movies.
We can all agree though, Wrath of Khan is going to ROCK on blu!
I would love for a Voyager boxset.
the only problem with the next generation (and i think voyager maybe as well) is that they need to re do all special effects work, because while the tv series was done on film (so its already beyond hd and can but put out in 1080p. the special fx work was all done on video. I know this is true for next gen and ds9 (not sure about all of voyager)
Zach, you're wrong. Voyager sucked. Totally.
DS9 box set, Next gen box set, enterprise box set would all be cool. Voyager would be a waste of time and money.
Even if the SFX were on film, they'd look shitty by todays standards. End of DS9 and most of voyager would be watchable, but they could do better. Then again, some of the new TOS special effects look really gay... I don't know how I feel about all of that, we'll have to see what Paramount does and see if it pans out.
dont care too much the original series but The Movies on the other hand I'm gonna have to pick up.........
I love my HD-DVD player and ST:TOS on the HD-DVD/DVD combo discs. I wish they had gotten all three seasons done before it died, but now I'll have to buy season 2 & 3 on Blu-ray.
Not that I won't buy 'em all anyway, but I think it'd make more sense to package II, III, and IV as a trilogy, rather than I, II, and III.
It had better be "The Director's Edition" of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, otherwise I'm not interested at all. This was the version of the movie released in 2001 that Robert Wise was finally happy with.
Personally, I'd rather see both available in the set. The original, "unfinished" version had its own charm, and frankly I don't want to see to thrown into obscurity just because it wasn't "preferred". Several directors have released theatrical versions and director's versions in the same set - "Legend", "E.T.", "Blade Runner", and so forth. There is no reason for "ST:TMP" to not follow the same direction.
We've gotten enough movie "historical revisionism" from George Lucas, thankyouverymuch.
I believe it will be the theatrical cut, as the new effects for the "Director's Edition" were done in 480p. I doubt they've redone them without a hint making at least the rumor mill.
I agree with John B. They need to do a release like they did in Blu-ray for "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Blade Runner" where they have every version that was ever released.
But that being said, I am gonna buy the Blu-ray version of TOS the minute it's available!
And anxiously await TNG, Voyager, DS9 and Enterprise as well. Sad that Babylon 5 lost all the special effects. That would be great in HD as well. I hope they decide it's worth re-doing the special effects of all the ST series. That's a lot of profit potential and employment opportunities for the people that put all the series together over the years. In this economy it would be stupid not to have timed releases for each series. Once one runs out of steam, the next is released. But would studio executives be smart enough to see it?
Nah.
TNG, DS9 and Voyager will require a massive remastering effort, far beyond what was done for TOS. The series were shot on film, but were mastered on videotape, like most shows of the era. The studio would have to go back to the original film elements and cut everything together again, which would be extraordinarily expensive and would take years. It's unfortunate, but those shows are truly going to be trapped in the era they were made in. TOS was shot and mastered on film and Enterprise mastered in HD. Kind of ironic that Trek's oldest and newest series are the only ones ready for the HD era.
I wouldn't say "extraordinarily expensive". VFX nowadays are cheap, remaking content is not. The studios have a golden opportunity with these older shows that have huge militant fan bases. They can repackage and re-air all that sort of thing in HD without having to pay the actors, directors or writers NEARLY as much as they'd have to do for a new show, they don't have to build sets, etc, and they can make a decent chunk of change. There aren't many good science fiction shows out there anymore, and this could easily fill the void, perhaps even attract new viewers to the franchise.
If it all works out, we could have a new series soon enough... Wouldn't that kick ass?
I have seen the HD version of TOS (in my market, it ran on NBC between 2 and 3 AM on Mondays... with the football game involved I had to manually record 2-3 hour blocks). Boy did it look great, although it was only 4:3. Clearly, they did a massive film restore... it was much brighter and more vibrant than it was, I'd swear. So it wasn't just about more resolution...
I would not mind seeing these i never saw the early movies only wrath of khan and i didn't even get to see the ending.
I have been looking for the trilogy recently at video stores to rent and cant find them anywhere, I love Star Trek, an all time fav, I will buy the Trilogy in a heart beat.
