My Bloody Valentine 3D grosses way more in 3D than 2D

RealD DELIVERS 71% OF THE $27 MILLION PLUS FIRST WEEK GROSS FOR LIONSGATE'S MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D
Film is first feature ever to release in more than 1,000 digital 3D locations
Los Angeles (January 23, 2009) – In what marks the widest theatrical 3D film release to date, RealD, the world's leading outfitter of 3D-enabled theatres, brought in 71% of the total box office for Lionsgate's My Bloody Valentine 3D, which topped $27 million in its first week of release. Verifying the growing strategy of releasing films in 3D, opening week 3D screens outperformed 2D screens 6:1.
"We are proud of the great opening week that Lionsgate had with My Bloody Valentine 3D in RealD theatres," said Michael Lewis, chairman and CEO of RealD. "3D continues to be the bright spot in the industry and it's clear that audiences responded to the promise of this superior filmgoing experience in RealD 3D."
Steve Rothenberg, President of Distribution for Lionsgate said "We are thrilled over the fantastic audience response to MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D. Lionsgate has been a leader in horror innovation, so it was important that MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D be a showcase for today's 3D as an immersive experience and not just a gimmick. RealD helped make that possible, and these opening numbers are proof of the film's success."
Presented in stunningly real, cutting edge 3D projection, My Bloody Valentine 3D stars Jensen Ackles (TV's "Smallville" and "Supernatural"), Jaime King (THE SPIRIT, SIN CITY, SIN CITY 2) and Kerr Smith (FINAL DESTINATION, "Dawson's Creek"). A remake of the 1981 horror classic, MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D is directed by Patrick Lussier from a screenplay by Todd Farmer and Zane Smith, based on a screenplay by John Beaird, story by Stephen Miller, and is produced by Jack Murray.

i wasn't aware that it was available in not3d
OK, even when compared to other slasher flicks, this movie was pretty bad. However, the 3D effects were really well done. There were a few obvious shots where they were trying to showcase the tech, but even the regular scenes showed quite a bit of promise. The only problem that I could see is that the objects outside of the plane of focus were almost headache inducing. It was like an object being out of focus twice.
I really enjoyed the movie. It felt like riding a ride at a theme park to me. However, I'm getting tired of the cost increases for 3D movies. A year ago it was a $1 surcharge to watch a Real D movie and now they're charging $3. One ticket for MBV3D was $12.75. I don't know if all of the chains in the US are doing this or just Regal and Carmike, but I'm not happy with paying that much.
I payed $10 to see it in 3d (RealD) at a really high end theater, and I thought that was still a bit much. I really enjoyed the movie, but I was in the RARE mood for a mindless old-school slasher movie and had low expectations going in. Still, I wasn't really impressed with the polarization technology. I though the depth of the 3d was great, but the glasses made the screen too dark and strained my eyes a bit. Motion looked choppy to me, and it always took me a second to focus on changing scenes. I really don't see the medium taking off with these problems. I'd actually like to try the shutter glasses for my new 3d samsung tv, but don't have $200 for a pair and I doubt the technology could ever make it to theaters.
For what it was (a slasher film) it was actually decent. The 3D really added to this film.
it was a good movie and even better in 3d
You can't say the 3D version was seen 6 times more, as tickets generally cost more for 3D theaters than the 2D equivelent.
It doesn'y say "seen" 6 times more, it says "outperformed". It's a ratio of dollar sales.

It used to say "seen" -- Darren changed the post after I made my comment. :)
I think that theatres are really the future for 3d. It's going to be a long time before people at home can get into a 3d setup, especially because it's going to be a bitch to wear glasses all the time, and I dunno about you, but I'll lose the things. At a theatre however, the atmosphere is different and lends more to having extra equipment on your head. I think that movie execs see this and realize that if they want to keep people going to the theatres in the future when TVs get bigger and better and everyone has the means to view 1080p content in their homes, they're gonna have to pull some kind of stunt. 3d may just be that stunt, and if it looks good, maybe it'll be worth everyone's time...
I manage a theatre, and we lost a lot of business this weekend because the film was not available in 3D at our location. The new 3d requires digital projection, which is still lacking in most theatres. While all the tv adverts touted the 3D aspect, there were actually 2 different posters produced, one for 3D and one for 2D. If you check for locatiosn online, most sites would list the film separely for 2D and 2D locations. And of course most customers have no idea whats required for 3D presentation, so they get pissed AND actually assume we are showing the 3D presentation WITHOUT the glasses. DOH!
Win
I am not sure where you live Winman42, but don't people have internet where you are. Fandaqngo.com, thetaer website and other websites will tell you which theater plays which movies. I can't believe that the audience for this movie especially (14-27_ would not be informed about the movie before they go.
It's may still be the novelty factor. I've yet to catch a 3D movie.
Not only did it gross more in 3D, it's more gross! Rimshot!
Watch this movie in 3D! It is stunning! I am surprised I actually enjoy this movie. It sticks to the old fashion slasher movie elements, which is fine. But this movie is really about the technology... I was going to watch it in 2D, but I am glad I watched this in 3D... Highly recommended!
Those 3d glasses look like something that Kim Jong Il would buy.
