hhgregg continues to scoop up Circuit City business
We wouldn't have predicted that when hhgregg started its Circuit City gift card program months ago that it would have come to this, but it's really just a natural extension of what the Naptown-based retailer has been up to. Circuit City customers left in a liquidation lurch can turn to hhgregg (assuming one is nearby) for factory authorized service on items purchased from the big red plug that are still under the original warranty. Additionally, hhgregg is extending its Circuit City gift card amnesty program to April Fool's Day -- a fitting date to end the cakewalk music, we think. It's good to see a retailer stepping in to help out consumers, and this kind of action might score some loyalty points redeemable in more flush economic times.

I guess there just aren't any of those stores close at all because I've never even heard of them.
We here in Morrow, GA have an HH Gregg literally across the street from the now defunct Circuit City. I guess all those people who bought stuff at CC now have an option.
There's also a brandsmart an exit away that makes buying from either of these stores look silly. HH is only good for their annual tent sale. Anything else can be had for a lot less at other retailers.
Funny....this looks like all the HH Gregg's here in Raleigh.....not busy.
I live in Indy (aka Naptown), and HHGregg has a pretty good reputation for decent prices on mid to upper mid range equipment. Got a great price on a washer/dryer last year, and speakers too. As with everywhere, you just have to wait to the sales.
The article in the local paper today about this mentioned up to 20% off for your gift card. So it sounds like, if you have a $100 gift card, you could only get the full $100 out of it if you got something $500 or higher. Nice move on the part of HH though, giving you a 20% discount for having a worthless piece of plastic.
Here's the Indystar blurb.

we have 2 here in raleigh and they are basically next to a bestbuy.
Did you know that more frozen bananas are sold right here on this boardwalk than anywhere in the O.C.?
The problem with HHGregg is that they work on commision and you get mobbed if you ever walk through the door.
It is impossible to go in an just look at stuff. You'll always catch a salesguy staring at you from 20 feet away just waiting for you to make eye contact.
They have decent prices and a pretty good selection of TVs. The ads piss me off though because they will have a picture of a TV and that won't be the one they are advertising for the price in the ad. It will say 50" Samsung TV $1499 with no model number and there will be a photo of a 850 series.
I've gotten in the habit of calling ahead to confirm, then I can avoid your two gripes.
I've been stuck enough times in your position, and am spoiled by online shopping, so a wasted trip is even more annoying. ;)
I like hhgregg ...that commission sales gripe is silly nonsense ...any electronics store you go in a sales associate asks if they can help you. You just say, "I'm just looking." They'll leave you alone after that. It's better than NOT being able to find someone who can help you.
