February is over, but the boring releases aren't; things should turn around pretty quickly now as the Oscar winners will be hitting the shelves between now and the Summer. There are a few nice day and date offerings from Hollywood this week though, like Fox who has
Australia and Image with
In the Electric Mist. Steeler fans should be happy know that they can relive the Super Bowl over and over again for the rest of their lives in HD. And finally MGM has the best catalog this week with the very good
Silence of the Lambs. As promised, we've added a poll this week to see who we should link to, so be sure to let us know as the voting ends in one week.
- Australia (Fox)
- Beverly Hills Chihuahua (Disney)
- Brokeback Mountain (Universal)
- I've Loved You So Long (Sony)
- In the Electric Mist (Image)
- NFL Super Bowl XLIII: Pittsburgh Steelers Champions (Warner)
- The Silence of the Lambs (MGM)
I want Netflix so that I can add them to the Q that much quicker.
C
I second that!
I don't belong to netfix...so I want anything but netflix.
I voted IMDB.. but I would have voted blu ray next then amazon.
I would say a 'review' link and an Amazon link. For the review I would link to Hi-Def Digest if they have review (sometimes they get them up a little before release) or Rotten tomatoes.
I agree with HighDefDigest or RT.
Beverly Hills Chihuahua?
Who do they think adopt a new format for material like this? These kind of customers are still watching VHS.
How about more classic movies that videophiles might buy?
Well, if I'm going to watch it because my kids want to watch it, I'm going to rent th blu-ray version, not the DVD version. Just remember, there'll be a movie that you want someday that others could say "These kind of customers are still watching VHS" about as well.
If Beverly Hills Chihuahua is coming out on DVD then it makes sense to release it on BD at the same time. Crap or not, that's just the way things happen. Studios are busy pumping out the back catalogue stuff too at the moment because of the time of year it is.
Wasn't the animated Wonder Woman movie also out this week?
Yes, as well as some other animated movies that aren't in the list.
Any reason why Engadget stopped using Highdefdigest?
A few reasons, but mostly because the weekly list was almost always inaccurate. It's been a while since I've checked them out, so maybe they got their act together recently.
I use DVDbeaver and HighDefDigest, mainly because I like DVDbeaver's reviews and I like the message board on HighDefDigest.
I can't stand DVD Beaver's reviews or general layout (a complete mess), but I think its picture comparisons are great. High-def Digest has great reviews but is pretty slow off the mark to review new titles and doesn't do screen grabs. DVD Town has decent reviews and is a good supplement. Blu-Ray.com has great pictures but its review scores are laughably all over the shop. AVS Forum also has occasionally interesting screen comparisons.
I guess the answer is to visit several sites to get a well-rounded idea of what a movie is like.
I'd like to see a poll for which new release you are going to buy. I'm curious what others are buying, and sometimes I haven't heard of a movie that is worth checking out.
Sounds like a good idea to me. Might be interesting to see what EHD readers plan to buy, then compare them with the videoscan results the next week.
The Silence of the Lambs is a great film. It's just a shame that the Blu-ray Disc being released this week allegedly delivers a terrible transfer.
Hey Ben Drawbaugh,
You may want to proofread your question. "Which Blu-ray movie links to you prefer?" Shouldn't the word "to" be "do"?
I like Amazon and Rotten Tomatoes .. I dont get why Rotten tomatoes dont get more votes .. Meta review socres rock and i read little quotes from reviewers i tend to agree with
I prefer Hi Def Digest to all of these options.
Hi Def Digest should be on the list. If it was, it'd be the clear winner too.
I was definitely looking for High Def Digest as well. Amazon, really? Come on Engadget, how do you leave out your original source of links for how many years?
-Brian
Obviously studios are concentrating more on quantity than quality, Silence of the Lambs is a great OLD movie, but the rest, who cares.
Rotten Tomatoes includes a link to add movies to your queue from their site, so I bet most that voted netflix would also like Rotten Tomatoes.
None of the above. I use this one. It's my favorite.
