When the receiver gets this matrix-encoded soundtrack, it goes into DPL decoding mode and steers any information present in both channels to the center channel and it steers the encoded surround information to the rear speakers. It's not a discrete surround mix, but it is a form of surround sound, albeit degraded. Because of this she was getting *some* dialog "leaking" into the left and right speakers but at an extremely low level. If they had connected the DVD player properly (via the fiberoptic or coax digital connection), then the dialog would have been completely absent and the problem would have been even more evident.

Chris

Comments on Geek Squad home theater setup horror story

Not exactly. Not connecting the center channel doesn't mean the center channel stream will automatically divert to the left and right speakers. There is another side of the Geek Squad that are called GSR and they perform the HT installation part of Geek squad.

I feel for Diane, but if her receiver had all HDMI inputs then setup would have been simple. I don't know of too many people that have a 4.0 or 4.2 system. I understand 2.0, 2.1,5.0, 5.1, 5.2, 6.0, 6.1, 7.0,7.1, and 7.2. It's to my understanding if Best Buy really wanted to make money the would have advised Diane to get the best cables to make money that be HDMI.

Its sad, but Diane got herself an bad installer. One bad experience does not ruin the whole Geek Squad. Now I made the process very painless on them, I had speaker and video cables ran through the walls in advance and made sure my parents were adequately educated in the gear they were having installed. But they still had to mount the Plasma and rear speakers and connect everything properly. The installers were knowledgeable, friendly, and generally people who I was glad helped my parents. I have no great love for Best Buy, I worked in the Home Theatre department for two years and know that employees there are generally poorly trained and have little clue of the things they sale, the few who do usually learn the ins-and-outs on there own.

The Installers at my store, on the Waterfront in Pittsburgh, PA, were incredibly knowledgeable people, as were the installers who helped my parents from the State College, PA store. While I'm sure there are plenty of duds out there who give the installers bad names, but in my experience they offer a quality service at a fair price.

That being said, I would rather have a certified ISF calibrator work on my TV then the Best Buy "ISF" techs... they were just out of their league.

tyba

Comments on Geek Squad home theater setup horror story

The lady complains they didn't hook anything up properly, yet she didn't want to purchase any of the cables necessary to do so. There is no way she could have gotten the right cables since digital audio cables (optical or coax) are not cheap, neither are HDMI or component video cables needed for the cable box. Supposedly the customer also had woofers? So I'm assuming they had the cables for that too? All for $20 at Radio Shack, I don't think so. They also don't say which services she purchased because they offer different packages of services. For all we know she only got a TV/Video set-up with speaker wiring. That would not include proper configuration of a surround sound system. This story sounds bogus especially the comment about what they wear because anyone that's had Home Theater related Geek Squad services would know that they don't wear the same uniform as the Computer Geek Squad. I'm not saying Geek Squad was right at all, but they both seem to be at fault. The problem is people like this don't want to buy all the cables they need to setup the equipment because they are too expensive (yes we all know what monoprice is but if you did you wouldn't have GS come over anyway), so the GS installers just have to do the best job they can with the cables the customer already owns.
I admit selling $70+ cables is kinda a crock but if you want it done right buy everything the BB employee tells you and have GS set it up, or better yet find the local techie neighbor kid and hand him $100 for cables and setup. The customer doesn't need to be "smart" about HDTV or home theater technology. They just need to have the money to pay the "smart" people from Geek Squad. She paid the $325 and got inferior service.
B.) The only cable she was lacking was a component video cable for the DVD player which she got for $20 at Radio Shack. As for "digital audio cables being expensive" - I used a plain old RCA-tipped video cable for the coax digital connection between DVD player and receiver (less than $5) - worked like a charm because it's the exact same thing.
C.) Actually I don't know what the Geek Squad home theater guys wear because I wasn't there when this guy did the "work" - I *assumed* they wear the same outfits as the regular Geek Squad guys but what he was wearing has no bearing on the quality of their service (piss poor).

chris

Comments on Geek Squad home theater setup horror story

The installers at my store and ones nearby are 'good' at WORST, and some are hard-core HT geeks that generally give the customer more than that paid for in terms of very detailed setup and instruction - above and beyond what the customer paid for or even knew existed.

Find me ANY company with 150,000+ employees were everyone is really good. Thats like saying, "Hey my plumber did a bad job, Im never having a plumber come out again, and hey you shouldnt either!" Thats a rediculous assumption. One was $325.11, the other is $216.74 so it's *possible* that she paid $199.99 plus tax (for home theater set-up) not the $325.11 she originally stated. She's going to try to find the itemized receipt for the service because AMEX online doesn't provide enough details to tell the difference between these two charges. I will update the article accordingly once I have confirmation. Thanks for the heads-up on that. You may have just saved Best Buy $108 in AMEX chargeback.

-CB

Chris

Comments on Geek Squad home theater setup horror story

screw best buy i hate them so much, always have the wrong price labels under their products, and when u go to ring it up its more expensive. my gripe with them mostly though was their car audio installers who, told me they coulnd install my head unit in a gm vehicle because the bracket was riveted on their, and they need to put a gm bracket to fit my new head unit due to size difference. anyways i went dwn the street to circuit city, and the installer loooked at my car and said there where no rivets it was just screwed on and the installer at cc said he could do no prob. and would match best buy free install special which ended that day. i go back to bb and they wont refund me the head unit they where unable to install, that i just bought 20 min earlier. because i paid cash so i had to wait 7-10 buisness days for a refund, and by that time the free install special would be over. so basically i had to show the installer how to remove the brackett. thats just one experience and only one with installation.. i could write a book about other bad bestbuy experiences with their stupid no tech knowledge teen sales staff. poor circuit city now offically dead, to the idiots at bestbuy

pete

Comments on Geek Squad home theater setup horror story

Pete, I'm sorry to hear about these bad experiences you have had with Best Buy. I understand that there are a lot of employees that do not know what they are talking about, but there are a lot of us who are knowledgeable about our product and are installers who do know how to properly hook up systems and fix computers. There are plenty of cases such as the one in this story where things have gone wrong, but I definitely feel that there are just as many positive stories as well. I've been a BBY employee since I was 16 (I'm 20 now), and I'd like to think that there are a lot of employees that work hard for our company just like I do. To assume that all stores and employees are alike is just wrong.

mustang86

Comments on Geek Squad home theater setup horror story

Personally I think this article is totally skewed because this ladies setup was far from normal. She has an off brand receiver for one. Now I am not saying the Integra receiver is bad. Instead I am saying that it is not a high volume model that the installer would be familiar with.

I can definitely understand why someone might setup a receiver incorrectly when trying to learn the receiver configurations for the first time.

Secondly, the ladies speaker selection is unusual at best. If she really doesn’t have a clue about how to setup a surround sound system why does she have a 4.2 setup? Sure you might be able to get a 4.2 system to sound good. However, I guarantee that it would be easier to setup a 5.1 system.

I think the real issue is who was the IDIOT who recommended that she buy this particular system and this particular configuration? A simple 5.1 or even 7.1 setup from HTD, ERA, or Aperion with a standard Pioneer 1018 or Yamaha RX-V663 receiver would have been a much better, cheaper, and easier to setup system.

To me it sounds like someone recommended some complicated system to a poor unsuspecting lady just so that person could write an article bashing the geek squad.

And no I don’t work for Best Buy or the Geek Squad. Personally I hate the Geek Squad with a passion. However, I don’t hate them for the reasons listed in that article. I know that if I was presented with setting up a convoluted 4.2 system on a receiver I had never used before I might make mistakes. And unlike the geek squad reps I do know what I am doing.

MPGXSVCD

Comments on Geek Squad home theater setup horror story

Actually her system was more "normal" than yours or mine, most likely. Diane, like most "regular people" bought her system over time, some new, some from hand-me-downs from friends. Most of her audio/video gear is 5 to 7 years old, but the TV was new as was the HD cable box. Because she got a new TV and cable box, she needed to connect everything all over again, hence the call to Geek Squad.

I never said her receiver was Integra (which is pretty high-end gear). I used the Integra's set-up menu screen shot as a graphical depiction of what a set-up menu looks like. Her DVD player is a Sony. Her receiver is a Sony. Nothing obscure about that. PRetty vanilla stuff. Her subwoofer/satellite speakers are Cambridge Audio, hand-me-downs from an audiophile friend (not me, I have Martin-Logans and I'm not handing those down to anyone... not just yet anyway). No "IDIOT" recommended she buy this system. It's what she's built up over time, and actually, when set up correctly, it doesn't sound half bad.

Have a nice day.

Chris
