Snow White was the very first platinum edition DVD released by Disney several years ago. I have it in my collection. It was 2 discs and the extras were overwhelming, even for today. The subsequent platinum editions didn't even compare. So I don't get it, except for being in blu-ray I guess, but then again this is an early 20th century animated feature, so I don't see the point of blu-ray for this title anyway.

freediverdude

Comments on Snow White's Blu-ray debut is October 6

well, maybe it is such a "Exclusive" time of a Month and a Half for Blu-Ray because exactly that it was already released recently on DVD only a few years ago.

this is great PR for Disney, at minimal cost, people can still buy it on DVD. pretty funny if you ask me. but i think getting this title on blu-Ray restored is great.

if you have to ask why a movie is on HD, i guess you are in the wrong place.... movies are fantastic in HD and in 1080P glory.

mitchelljd

Comments on Snow White's Blu-ray debut is October 6

Wonderful news! People need to realize that the first time around, it was captured on reels for standard playback using a size that is probably about equivalent to 480p 3:4, which is standard TV playback as we know it. So if they simply upresed the original footage, there is no increase in quality because it was only captured with a certain amount of detail the first time around. If they went back and recapped the animation using HD quality, then yes, you will probably see a good increase in quality and it will look good.

So, does anyone know if they went back to the original animation and recapped it with modern equipment, or did they upres the original capture?

Benz145

Comments on Snow White's Blu-ray debut is October 6

Actually, don't quote me on the 4:3 ratio; as I recall, Snow White was the first animated feature length film, and I don't know if they used widescreen way back then in movie theaters or not.

Benz145

Comments on Snow White's Blu-ray debut is October 6

Oh and one more thing : )

Mike, I have no prejudice against HD animation. In fact, I would love to see one of the most epic animated series ever made, Avatar, in HD more than you can imagine. But, I can't stand when people don't actually 'get' HD. When I see LCD HDTVs with DVD players built into the side of them; it doesn't make any sense to me. When I see a DVD player with HDMI output that upreses DVDs to 'HD quality' I laugh at the people who think they are watching HD content.

Benz145

Comments on Snow White's Blu-ray debut is October 6

The aspect ratio has nothing to do with the resolution. Oh, and they didn't use widescreen until much later, after TV. The format is still too much of an enthusiast's platform for them to get away with another "uncut" censored release. I think I would die laughing if we got to see a 1080p version of that EXTREME closeup of the Centaurette from the DVD release. The resolution went out the window.

Benz, what I think they did was take a pristine film negative and go from there. The digital restoration techniques employed by Disney are second to none, from what I can tell. You would be gobsmacked if you ever got to see how the True Life Adventures series turned out. And for animated features, they even do a bit of cheating, by doing things like re-rendering scrolling backgrounds after they've been remastered. As far as the film goes, trust me on this: Unless we're talking about 8mm, film has more than enough resolution to justify a 1080p transfer. Check out Star Trek in HD. Those were 16mm films.

Asterra

Comments on Snow White's Blu-ray debut is October 6

The Snow White Trailer on the new Pinocchio Blu Ray looks incredible , just beautiful quality , a crisp pristine print of my favourite Disney animated motion picture!
