AT&T trumpets U-verse gains in Q1
AT&T's U-verse service just keeps on growing, with Q1 subscriber additions beating out those record Q4 numbers from last year, and up significantly from last year's 148,000 to 284,000. Now 1.3 million strong, it looks like offering dual tuner HD, 100 HD channels and Total Home DVR is having some effect. No word on plans for the future, although even with plans to more than double availability having slipped to 2011, we wouldn't be surprised to see the service rolling out in new areas soon. Now, about that Xbox 360 IPTV...

Never underestimate stupid in large numbers.
For those of you living in Connecticut service is available in Bristol. and VRADs are appearing throughout Burlington
I've had U-Verse since December and have been quite satisfied so far (since they fixed our TV randomly freezig and pixelating at least) Much better than my previous Dish/DSL setup. It's actually made me not utterly despise at&t.
Now make with the HD Viacom networks already (and IPTV on my Xbox)
Call me when the fiber reaches all the way to my house
I have had U-verse since February and love it it is better then the direct TV set up I ditched and cox. Always nice when you call cox and tell them to cut of the internet and they try to down play U-verse saying all they can get is 5 or 10mg on internet and I just replied apparently you have not seen or used it because your info is wrong thank you and her is your card. Not to mention the total home DVR is so freaking great.
AT&T U-Verse has been available in my area since late 2008. I was tempted at first, but then I noticed that the pricing would come out to be the same as my current Time Warner. And that is with slower internet and not including fees for extra set top boxes for all of my televisions. The only sign-up deal they have is a $200 rebate. I'd rather have a locked in low price for 6 months or a year. They've already raised the advertised price once in the past five months.
What's the point of competition if it doesn't offer lower prices? I thought that was the point of competition.
I guess this explains why they offered me such a sweet deal when I called to inquire about Uverse earlier this week. They must be afraid of FIOS and Docsis 3.0 and just want to amass subscribers. Uverse had been available to me since early last year but I didn't bother with it since they wouldn't allow me to get the service without the TV service attached (I only wanted the quasi-fiber internet). They offered me the service with only the internet (10mb/1.5mb) and waived the installation fee plus they offered the same monthly rate that I'm currently paying for their 1.5mb/384k DSL. I couldn't resist so I signed up. Something to hold me over till FIOS moves in. The only other option was Time Warner which would have been 2x more expensive for comparable speeds and the caps/tier news lately doesn't put them in a good light.
There really needs to be a lot more competition in the broadband space. This 1 to 2 choice per market is why the US isn't number 1 when it comes to speeds.
When I first heard about U-Verse I was excited.
18Mbps internet
Total home DVR
4 Tuner DVR
All movie channels
Home phone service
2x as many HD channels as I have now
2 extra boxes
all for about $20 less than I pay now for less stuff.
I was ready to sign up as soon as it was ready in my area.
BUT there is one thing they don't tell you. You can only have 1 HD feed coming to the house at a time. I watch 2 shows at the same time on Monday nights at 9(Heroes and 24) both in HD and the other HDTV in my house may be watching another HD channel. So as great as everything else sounds U-Verse would not be an option for me and i would guess a lot of other people.
Wow, thanks for the 411 on that one! That's a very, very large issue for me. I'm going to switch to either dish, or direct this week instead. Every time I see U-verse in action( and this may be not the case with all subscribers) it's incredibly pixel blocked looking, particularly with sports!
That's not entirely true. From their website
"*Four channels can be recorded to the DVR or viewed simultaneously, up to 2 can be HD based on geographic restrictions."
It mentions DVR specifically, but I'd imagine its the same.
I've heard the TV service wasn't all it's cracked up to be. How the HD was overly compressed and how it wasn't until recently that they rolled out the ability to watch multiple HD channels simultaneously (within the premises).
Not really an issue to me since I only ordered the internet (which I've heard most people are satisfied with). It's the TV and Voice service that seems to get a lot of the complaints. That along with installation problems.
It depends on where you stay..I can get 2hd/2sd where i live and others in my neighborhood can only get 1hd/3sd. Besides in May you will
have the ability to set and schedule recordings from any receiver and the ability to delete recordings from any receiver if not being viewed
It all depends on how close you are the the VRAD. From my understanding, if you are within 1000 feet of the VRAD, you can get the full 2HD/2SD. That is nice, being able to set and delete recordings from any receiver will be nice.
C'mon guys. Bring it to my tiny little town and I'll happily get it.
What? Where do I live? Oh, this tiny little town you've probably never heard of.
DALLAS, TEXAS
And there is an "agreement" that Verizon cannot provide services (read: FIOS) within the city limits. Thanks, guys.
