New DirecTV TiVo HD still on schedule for this year
We can't believe it, but Twitter is really taking over the world. We mean, first celebrities found it and now it seems to be the source of some solid gadget news: like confirmation from DirecTV that the new DirecTV TiVo HD is on schedule to be released by the end of this year. It's been over six months since DirecTV and TiVo announced plans to once again work together, but after the announcement that DirecTV suspended its Media Center tuner project, we had fears that whatever put that project ice, affected the TiVo project as well. Don't get too excited just yet though, as there is still no word if the new DirecTiVo will be missing key features like TiVoToGo and Multi-Room Viewing, like the old one.

So does this mean adding a TiVo charge to the DirecTV bill. Its that monthly bill for a service that I get for free in Windows Media Center that will keep me from ever buying a TiVo.
If by that, you're asking if it will be the same or similar to the monthly fee that exisiting Directivo owners pay, then yes.
What you should be asking for, instead of freebies, is something useful for that five spot. If a scheduled show will run late, then I'd like for my recorder to compensate.
If you've ever used a Tivo you wouldn't want anything different. The DVR's out there just can't hold a candle to a true DVR. Tivo's are simply the best. Sorry you'll never see the true dvr.
Ps you can buy a Tivo and pay a one time fee for lifetime service for Tivo's again. So glad that's back
Well, if they're adding MRV to the new HR2x devices, there's reason to believe that it should be available on the TiVos as well.
My guess is that they'll charge more per month as well.
But as long as the price isn't astronomical, I'll probably switch - I miss TiVo... :(
The guys over there with the fuzzy black antennas would be very foolish to release a product at the end of '09 without TiVoToGo, Multi-Room, and other Boxee competitive features. Then again, if it doesn't generate the $, the suits could vote it down. And I'm sure DirecTV would have some say about it, at the end of the day.
You dont pay extra for "TIVO" service when you have this. Its no different than the regular DVR fee. At least, thats the way it was with the last TIVO unit for DirecTV.....
Before this would be a no brainer, but after using the DirecTV DVR for so long now and watching it improve, I may miss the Live TV preview in the corner when I go to the guide or my Now Playing list. I have no idea why Tivo still has not added this critical feature.
I prefer the no live tv preview when going to List. Comes in handy when both tuners are recording something and I don't want to see the ending of a movie I'm recording where the robots take over the earth or when the game winning goal/run/point/etc shows up in that damn preview box. Preview box for the guide...yes. For the list/now playing...not so much.
That live preview is the WORST feature in the HISTORY of DVRs!!!!
Look, if I never* watch anything live... Which I haven't since December, 1999, when I got my first DVR, why would I want to see something in the corner of the guide?! Half the time it's just spoiling some show I'm recording! At least let me turn it off if I want!
One of my LEAST favorite features of the stupid DirecTV HD DVR.
* excluding sporting events
Both of the people commenting on this negatively are incorrect. First of all, it does not have to be LIVE. It can be what you are watching that is recorded. I find it extremely valuable. Especially when I am watching something that you do not need to see in full screen hi-def, like a talk show interview. I have a lot of things that I do in the menus and I love the fact that I can do these things without having to interrupt watching what I have on.
As for the scenario where you are recording two things at once and you DON'T want to see something so you don't ruin it, try changing it to the other channel it is recording unless that is also a "cliffhanger" thing that you don't want to see. How about turning the sound down and DON'T LOOK.
This feature is great. I propose that the people who do not like it are in the minority.
I don't know why this Twitter comment is newsworthy. The PR flack who handles DirecTV's Twitter account is simply repeating the same crap DirecTV and Tivo have been spewing all along. I doubt they have any actual insight into the situation.
You know who does have actual insight? TiVo does, and they're saying 2010.

The twitter person is just a PR flack that can't give any info beyond what's already been in a press release.
well, i would love a fully functional Directv HD DVR Tivo, but... i don't want to wait forever.
also, it would be great if these tivo's had larger hard drives than what Directv provides.
why not a 1 terabyte drive?
Well, with the recent news that the DTV dvr will soon have dual buffers, perhaps the Tivo folks are feeling a little worried that their product may soon be obsolete.
I was hanging on to my SD directivo waiting for the new tivo so I could switch between shows while having them both hold the last 30 minutes in buffer. If the DTV dvr will do this (reportedly up to 1.5 hours), I'm tossing my tivo, and doubt I'm the only one from the forums I've checked out while waiting for the new unit.
Where did this bit of news come from? I have been waiting for this ever since I got the direct tv hd dvr. I would be so excited if they are finally adding this function.
I don't care..just let me get rid of these horrible D-TV DVR, I can't wait...i CAN't wait. Its about time!
I have four DVRs – three of which are HD DVRs. The third is an SD Tivo that I just can’t let go of. Yes, there are features on the DirecTV’s DVR that I like – but there are too many items that I don’t like when compared to the DirecTivo unit.
What do I miss?
• The capability of pausing both tuners and switching back and forth from one to the other while KEEPING THE OTHER PAUSED. This was extremely useful when watching the NFL Sunday ticket and pausing one game in order to catch up on another. Can I jimmy the current on to do this? Sure – by way of recording each. Horrible!
• Related to the first feature, I miss just simply hitting the Live TV button and hopping over to the other tuner. So minimal yet so useful.
• The option to select-play-select-30-select to set the DVR to a 30 second skip. Yes, it’s there on the DirecTV, but the Tivo could be configured for more than 30 seconds – or less. Again, useful.
• The common-sense approach the button layout. The Tivo devs just had a knack for knowing where to naturally place the buttons. I find myself STILL looking down at my remotes now to see where what button is in what location.
• Related to the last feature, I miss a remote that actually works. I presume it’s probably not the remote and more the DVR, but I find myself entering keys over and over and over because it’s misses a digit. Ugh.
• A responsive DVR. Even when I moved from my SD Tivo to my HD Tivo, it was still much more responsive than the DirecTV DVRs I have now. I change the channel and it’s seriously upwards of four seconds or more before I can start watching that channel. Oh, and don’t forget the painful issue I have with ALL of my current HD DVRs where I push the fast forward button (or 30 second skip) and it jumps all the way to the end. That’s FANFREAKINTASTIC when you’re watching Idol and don’t want to know who got kicked off or a game and don’t want to know the score. GREEEEEAT.
I would love to have the MRV option and TivoToGo. Someone mentioned earlier that DirecTV had MRV, but that’s really only for purchased VODs, right? Unless that is a feature they’re coming out with and haven’t implemented yet, I have not heard of this. I would also imagine the devices would have to be networked (which mine are).
Oh, and because they’re networked, they jack with my Popcorn Hour. PCH says it’s DTV’s fault. DTV says the reverse.
Late
Good to know, I have a friend keeping an eye on this product...
I've waiting for this new box to upgrade my tv at the same time.
Here's Tivo's comments direct from the annual report (see Edgar for yourself). Looks like early 2010 at the earliest but read for yourself:
"On September 3, 2008, the Company extended its current agreement with DIRECTV for the development, marketing, and distribution of a new HD DIRECTV DVR featuring the TiVo ® service. Under the terms of this non-exclusive arrangement, TiVo expects to develop a version of the TiVo service for DIRECTV’s broadband-enabled HD DVR for a launch to consumers as soon as possible in calendar year 2010. DIRECTV, upon deployment of the HD DIRECTV DVRs with TiVo service, is entitled to recoup, over time, a portion of certain development fees through a reduction in certain subscription fees. The new agreement also extends the mutual covenant not to sue with respect to each Company’s products and services throughout the term of the new agreement.
Under this new agreement, DIRECTV will pay a substantially higher monthly fee for households using the new HD DIRECTV DVRs with TiVo (when and if the new version of the TiVo service is deployed) than the fees for previously deployed DIRECTV DVRs with TiVo service. DIRECTV will continue to pay the current monthly fee for all households using only the previously deployed DIRECTV DVRs with TiVo service. "
If my DirecTV DVR had eyes, I'd scratch them out. I miss TiVo so much I can't even put it into words.
You guys are the best Im glad to see that there are others out there who hate the dtv dvr so much compared to the tivo directv dvr.
Now if we can all only get a life
Long live Tivo.
I started with cable Tivo, then switch to direct tv with tivo (T60), then moved and switched to directtv dvr and couldn't stand it. I then thought I'd try Dish DVR, and hated it even more. I just ditched the idea of High Def in favor of Tivo and dusted off the old Sony T60 and switched back to direct TV. I can't wait for this new unit to come out. It will be nice to get the same great Tivo software/remote updated to current features. I really hope they allow all the features current Tivo users get like Tivo2Go and kidzone.
