DirecTV HD TiVo actually not due until 2010
We got pretty excited last week when we saw that the DirecTV Twitter feed indicated that the DirecTV HD TiVo was still on track for the second half of 2009 -- as promised. But shortly after the feed was once again updated and the gem isn't due this year after all. We're not sure what caused the mix-up, but it looks like another year of waiting for those TiVo fans who prefer satellite over cable.

What the hell ever happened to Comcast Tivo's ?
The Comcast TiVo exists in parts of Mass. and Conn., and has for a while. However it seems Comcast has been REALLY REALLY slow about rolling it out to other parts of the country.
and I bet you that 99.999% of it is legal/political rather than technical. Pathetic...
Not that I have satellite, but still pathetic.
Son. Of. A. Bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb!
Seriously. How freaking hard can it be to merge these two devices? I think you are right about it not being a technical issue. I think quite a few companies are also trying to play it safe with the economy right now and are scared to release anything new and big because they are worried not enough people will buy them and it will seem that they are a flop.
Call me crazy, but I had a Tivo in 2000 and got the Directv Tivo when it first came out and had the DIrectv HD Tivo(HR10-250) and now have just two Directv HR20s and I have to say I much prefer the HR20s to any Tivo I've owned.
Now having said that, I'll take the extra features (multi-room viewing, amazon unbox, podcasts, ect.) from Tivo on my Directv HD DVR. But just for regular viewing, I find the HR20 faster and easier to navigate and also like the constant live picture box in almost all menus.
Me, I hate the constantly-on thing in the corner, in no small part to the fact that I watch a lot of sports time-delayed. So my M.O. when I come home is to hit the "TiVo" key so that I DON'T have Live TV on when I get there.
Otherwise the feature is "OK" as long as it can be turned off.
I am so friggin pissed about this! I have been waiting patiently for this new unit to come out. I'm getting really tired of Directv. Bottom line is; Directv DVR sucks and Tivo rules!
nice to have choices though, I really loath that live TV box that you cannot get rid of. More than once it has spoiled the end of a live broadcast show before I have time to activate that show's beginning from the playlist.
When upgrading to HD I got the DTV DVR last year. So disappointed, limited to only 50 season passes, slow navigation, easy to hit the wrong button and get totally lost, hard to find the show to record (seems to default to on demand shows first) records shows on channels I don't even receive. The HD picture is super and have fallen in love w/ HD picture but still record on TiVo upstairs because more than once the DTV DVR has missed a recording or doesn't recognize a series. It also lacks the info feature in Tivo w/ show numbers so that we can play them in order. 2010 just can't come soon enough...
What mix-up? The Twitter PR twit simply regurgitated DirecTV's most recent press release on the issue, which was out-of-date. It was completely unworthy of a post on here, but at least you're posting a correction, even though the issue of Engadget using a worthless source isn't addressed at all.
cablevision needs to upgrade i wish i still had direct tv but the bill hot to high .
Further delay of this box will do more harm than good. I'm on my second DirecTv Tivo box (Samsung SIR-S4040R) and I still love it. I've been waiting for an HD version to be released, but now I think I'll pass. Two reasons:
1. The availability of shows online. Only non-network shows I watch are on FX, and therefore are generally available on Hulu with a 1 week delay. I've got a PC with Media Center, 2 HD tuners, an OTA antenna, and an Xbox. I'll be ok with the network shows in HD.
2. DirecTv's move to "lease only" equipment. So I can't walk into a store and buy a receiver, I have to rent one from them (indefinitely) and either return it to them or pay a ridiculous fee at termination. I bought my first unit discounted with contract, it took a lightning strike and I replaced it via Ebay for $40 (plus DirecTv's $50 in fees for access cards and equipment change).
As with everything DTV talks about this will be Dec 2010 at the earliest.
dec, 2010, damn not even the start of the year. darn.
No worries for me after reading that DirecTV is testing dual line buffers (DLB) for it's current crop of DVRs.
That's the main advantage remaining for Tivo....the ability to switch back and forth between two paused shows, like sporting events, so you can fast forward through commercials and boring parts.
I'll probably stop waiting for the new Tivo when this upgrade comes out and go for the newer equipment, which includes the ability to run two satellite feeds into your home over one cable.
not having DLB in the DTV HD DVR was a HUGE shock, it never crossed my mind that it wouldn't have DLB!!! i sooo miss my tivo.
I've never used a Tivo, but their current DVRs are excellent. No complaints here.
If you've never been to Paris, France--Big Spring, Texas will suit you fine.
In an attempt to get some popularity to the movement, I've created a facebook group. Hopefully this will be a way to let both DirecTV and TiVo to make nice and play well with each other.
Why do American Cable and sat TV boxes look so darn ugly? seriously over here in the UK, our Sky+HD box looks so much neater and more stylish than anthing comcast, DirecTv Dish or anyone puts out, here is what a Sky+HD box looks like http://www.wessexaerials.com/Sky%20HD%20box.JPG i doubt anyone could argue that the direct tv tivo pictured above looks better
what is the difference between this unit soon to come out and the current HR21? what is wrong with the HR21? should I go with the HR21 for now or wait?
HR21 is a Media Center device for PC's - and it was canned in December after being rumored since 2005-06.
