Blu-ray Disc Association working to create a standard for home 3D
Count the Blu-ray Disc Association as the latest to jump on the 3D standards bandwagon, announcing the formation of a task force to create a universal 3D home entertainment spec. It's already been said that Blu-ray will be a great delivery mechanism for 3D, but without a standard, even incredible productions like Coraline come home in anaglyph 3D instead of the stereoscopic 3D format that more HDTV sets are beginning to support. We won't even begin to wonder who they will back, there's not even a timetable for meetings yet but hopefully all this gets worked out sooner rather than later so we can enjoy our Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience at home, the same way we did in the theater (3 times, it was fantastic.)

Does apple support blue ray?? Why is the apple logo there??
Apple has supported Blu-ray since the beginning. The only reason Steve Jobs isn't tossing a BD Superdrive in every system right now is because of the price, also, I think he doesn't believe that Blu-Ray is in the right place just yet. You can buy DVD-Rs for about $0.30 - 0.75 per disc. With Blu-ray, one disc costs about $15 - 25.
@ LiqwidZero
a blank BD-R single layer 25 Gb runs around $3 - $4 if you know where to buy them
Haha...Steve Jobs is concerned about the price? Look at the silly price for the systems he sells now. That's just ridiculous.
Stop confusing price with quality.
Blu-ray and standards. Ha, ha, it is to laugh.
Agreed. BDA and Standardization DO NOT go together.
What we need is U2 3D on blu-ray. That would be great.
Oh gheez. We have to rely on these monkeys to come up with a new standard..
BD3D profile 1, BD3D profile 1.1, BD3D profile 2.0 (not compatible with profile 1 and 1.1)
Yeah, just what Blu-ray needs right now.
Dilute efforts and resources with this 3D cr@p.
If ever there was a product the mass-market really couldn't care less about 3D TV is it.
It's, at best, a cherry on top extra.
It's not a selling point (of any value to anyone sane) in itself.
Too many execs have lost their minds over this sort of thing, they have forgotten that at the end of the day for most it's still just TV.
TV soaps in 3D?
As if.
Ugh. No no no no and no.
Blu-ray doesn't need to add 3d, by the time they come up with something and hardware starts showing up there will be a better format out there. 3d is a waste of time. They need to concentrate more on pushing the studios to publish hd caliber blu-ray discs. Good quality, no sound errors, speeding up the bdlive servers that studios use. Stop with the horrible digital sharpening that some studios are doing. Stop removing film grain from the movies where it is intentional.
A well mastered movie with lossless sound (that is the default choice when you put the disc in, ahem, Warner Brothers, I'm talking to you) should be its primary focus from now on. Leave the spec where it is. It doesn't need any more crap added onto it.
I just got "My Bloody Valentine 3D" on Blu-ray today. Unfortunately it's pink/green glasses and not the nice poloarized ones that RealD provided in the theatre. I just want them to make it so that I can experience the same great level of of 3D quality at home as I can in the theatre.
The trouble is, Blue, that as with all of these flashy new fads the effect itself becomes the big deal.
The movie makers just can't help themselves (and with ties to the CE industry so close now they'll be pushing this every way they can).
Instead of an excellent movie we will get a stream very ordinary and instantly forgettable movies (if that good) with lots of showy nonsense like this thrown in.
It's a very poor substitute for a quality movie well written and acted.
IMO it's probably the prime reason for why 3D will never take off (again).
what the hell is the difference between anaglyph and stereoscopic 3d? from what i saw on wiki, anaglyph images are used to great stereoscopic images...but i couldn't decipher much else. any help?
what is the obsession with 3D and BD-live all i want to do is watch the damn movie. Stop adding these worthless features and make the movies cheaper.
I bet BD Ass. is working to create a standard for home 3D. I'm gunnin for ya Toshiba
The requirement for a standard has been around for ages. This task group should have been up and running last year and should have already delivered a standard. Why not save loads of time and money and just use panasonic standard.
Panasonic for its part should not collect a licensing fee from the Association members
and rely on their head start they should be able to get players to market first.
There Problem sorted.
Now just the small issue of my fee.
