NEC upgrades DLP projectors for higher res 3D in time for the premiere of Up
If you roll out this weekend to check out Disney Pixar's latest addition to the 3D film movement Up, you might be seeing it broadcast by one of NEC's new NC2500S-A projectors or an older model that has been upgraded, sending out 3D in 2K res courtesy of Texas Instruments' DLP chips. The kids might not notice a 33% improvement in resolution and brightness over previous generations that let it put the show on bigger screens than ever before, but we're sure you will. Word is Clearview's Ziegfeld Theatre is one of the first with the upgrade, so if you're close by, we all know how important choosing a theater carefully can be these days.

why , when you can get 3d at 4k res instead?
http://www.theprytania.com/ the prytania is at it again, they are new orleans first and only heatre with 3d projection, just a few months ago they were the first to go digital , and digital 4k
Because you can't get it in 4K. The Sony runs the left eye on the top of it's chip and the right eye on the bottom and then uses a special lens to converge the two images on screen. The Sony doesn't have to alternate the images the way that DLP based projectors do though.
This news isn't really a huge deal though, Barco has had a system like this for a while and Christie's is on the way. This is an upgrade to the DLP formatter system that allows for better bandwidth to the DLP chip to allow it to run at full resolution during 3D.
My local theater in Eureka is finally getting 3D in time for UP. I hope they got one of these but I'm sure they just got a used one off eBay.
Depends on who is running the theater, if it's Regal it will be a Sony 4K. They're rolling some out right now.
Regal and AMC are both rolling out Sony 4K CineAlta apparently. I remember reading about AMC here, but not Regal.

The chain is called Coming Attractions Theaters
I doubt my local theater (not a chain) got the upgraded equipment, but I did catch the premier of Up last night. The 3D animation was gorgeous, and the 3D teaser of Toy Story 3 was outstanding as well!
Definitely recommend the movie to those of you with girlfriends... it can be a tear jerker for the ladies.... I know my g/f loved it!
I too loved Up in 3D. Here in San Diego almost every theater is showing 3D now. In fact I'm lucky to live just 5 min from an Ultrastar Theaters which from what I understand is one of the few (if not the only ) theater to have DLP in every theater and show 99% of its movies in Pure Digital. In fact they had 2 or 3 theaters equipped to show up in 3D.
The Muvico chain of high-end theaters also presents in pure digital, or at least my local branch. they're also CineAlta projectors as they have a snazzy little intro movie with their logo, kinda like how DLP has their logo at the end of the IMAX Digital countdown. IDK how many are 3D capable though, but my guess is many since I know at least 2 are since I saw Monsters vs. Aliens there.

3D is way way over rated. Its not worth the extra money. I just saw UP in 3D at one of the start of the art theaters around here and though the movie looked good, the 3D is lacking. So far I have not been impressed with any of the 3D movies that has been made. Maybe it just doesn't work on me. Sure there were some spots with some good depth to them but nothing all that great.
I wish they would drop this 3D push for games and movies. Plus the glasses suck. They make watching the movie worse.
I also think 3D movie in theater is a rip off for cost almost the same as Imax, i saw alien vs monter in Imax 3D, it look good but little virtual are stand out, i much prefer those 3d in amusement park like terminator and shrek.
