You'll still need the love and support of your dear cable provider, but if you're within range of DOCSIS 3.0 service, you can bypass at least one aspect of dealing with your local

just a cable modem? well thats boring.
Well, i just done know if this modem actually works any faster. how is this different from the cable modem's we already get offered from Moto and stock from companies like Time Warner or Comcast.
i think docsis 2.0 can only go up to 30mbps, So this is what you need if you are in the newer areas that are offering the speeds of 50+
AFAIK, the cable modems MAC address has to be authorized by the MSO ore it won't function. And I seriously doubt ay would allow it at this point.
Not to mention those with triple play packages, I think mostly you need a modem that can also connect the phone side.
Bought one from Fry's in April 2009.
Took two calls with Comcast to get it up and running.
My previous Surfboard was good for about 5Mbs down and 1Mbs up.
The DOCSIS 3 Surfboard is good for about 10Mbs down and 3Mbs up.
Fry's was selling it for $99 with a $20 mail in rebate.
Had my previous Surfboard for 7 years, saved about $420 in rent from Comcast, by owning my own modem.
