2009 British Open broadcast confirmed in standard def on TNT & ABC
Bad news golf fans, HDSportsGuide has confirmed that yet again, this year's British Open will be in standard definition on ABC and TNT. At least it will be in native widescreen and the event will be covered thoroughly, including shots from ABC's Segway-mounted Steadicam and X-MO super slow motion camera, but we still can't get over living in a world where the WNBA draft is in 720p and one of golf's major championships and F1 racing aren't.

To correct you, F1 racing is broadcasted in HD, and is available in America on SPEED HD.
No, it isn't, it's widescreen SD shown upconverted.
Richard your right, my bad. I do believe there is talks about broadcasting the last grand prix in HD.
I certainly hope so, there's just no reason it shouldn't be.
Why does ABC hate HD so much? They don't even show commercials for their own shows in HD during prime time. I just don't get it.
And lost in 720p (the only time I watch ABC) looks like crap; at least the 1080p Blu-rays and reruns on the Sci-Fi (I refuse to call it by its new name) network look better
Doesn't ABC (er, ESPN on ABC) use a british feed for the telecast?
What I don't understand is during college football they do not show all the football games in HD. I know they are shot on HD camera's because when I watch the highlights on ESPN they are in HD. But it blows my mind they do not do the live broadcast in HD. I think only 1 game per saturday is in HD the rest SD.
ABC does truly hate HD.
This is unacceptable.
Someone tell Old Blighty that HD has already arrived and its time to catch up.
We need to let them know how we feel by showing up NOT! in their ratings.
To be absolutely clear, the tournament is called "The Open", without the "British" qualifier. Would you like the rest of the world to belittle The Masters by calling it "The US Masters"?
Meh... who gives a shit besides you? There's no attempt to belittle anything here. It likely came about because there's a "U.S. Open". So to avoid any confusion people started calling this tourament the "British Open".
BTW, it's kind of funny that you mention "The US Masters", because the very first sentence in the Wiki article about The Masters mentions that it is often called exactly that by people outside the US. So apparently the term is already in use:

Well duhhhhh ABC is going to do this crap. They were the same company that stated that we will do better without Monday Night Football on ABC. That turned out great for them !?!
This isn't ABC's fault - Blame the BBC, who say it is too big a job to cover the Open in HD. They manage it for Wimbledon, and Sky manage it for other European Tour events, so it is pretty pathetic...
Europeans are so lazy they don't even have HD over there yet.. when are they going to catch up to the advanced USA???
