If it was region-free out of the box, maybe. I know there are hack software and hardware mods out there, but software means you don't get the benefits of the new firmware updates from Oppo and hardware means even more money.

Having tried several Blu-ray players, I still find the PS3 to be the best value overall. I also don't buy the argument people are making that Blu-ray PQ on the Oppo is noticeably better than most of the other latest generation players out there, or for that matter the PS3.

In terms of a full-fledged media player, I'm saving my money to get the Popcorn Hour C-200 when it's released this month. Not for you penny pinching, whining " I want a cheap BD player " people. For what it does it's very affordable. Oppo doesn't make trash so they don't charge trash prices. I own Denon's DVD2930CI, a Primare CD21 and a Sony BDP-350 (My PS3 is for games). The Oppo BD player or the Denon 3800 BDCI are the only Multi-purpose players I would ever consider (If I didn't have individual players). I paid $400 for my sony BD player when it came out, so I would definitely order this AWESOME Oppo BD player today.

Tony Stark

Comments on OPPO's long-awaited BDP-83 universal Blu-ray player now shipping

Tony,

II agree with you 100%. Stop the whining! This player is a bargain at $499.00 for everything that it does. Oppo could have very easily asked for more for this player and would have gotten it. The only other universal player available is the Denon DVD-A1UDCI which has a MSRP of $4,500.00. Also, the only other players that this player is currently being compared to is the Pioneer Elite BDP-09FD, Sony BDP-S5000ES, Denon DVD-3800BDCI and recently the Denon DVD-A1UDCI; and the Oppo fared very well.

If $499.00 is not your price point and you have no use for SACD, DVD-A and all the other media support and customer support that is 2nd to none, then the Oppo is definitely not for you. There are plenty of options below this price point. Pick the one that best suits your needs and budget.

Respectfully,
Willie

Willie

Comments on OPPO's long-awaited BDP-83 universal Blu-ray player now shipping

I bought two of these. For the price, it's a bargain. Superb upscaling of SD DVDs, rapid loading/unloading of Bluray disks, plays my DVD-A perfectly and most important, after sale support better than any Bluray manufacturer I've dealt with (Sony, Denon, Pioneer). And the Wifi works well for BD live and firmware uploads. The front USB port allows you to listen to music, see your photos on a wide screen, etc. You can get a cheaper player which will probably give you just as good a picture with Bluray disks, but this player does much, much more. If you don't need/want all of that, save your $ and get a $99 player from Walmart. Get what's right for your needs.

Ishan Bhattacharya

Comments on OPPO's long-awaited BDP-83 universal Blu-ray player now shipping

I bought my hardware modified Oppo BDP-83 in New Zealand from www.oppo.co.nz and it kills all the other Panasonic BD players I have ever owned + the PS3.

The hardware mod is much better than the software hack at least the firmware upgrades dont wipe it!

Already those that used the software version have had to revert to an earlier firmware as its stopped working. I didn't buy it for supporting more "exotic" media like SACD, but for the spectacular upscaling of DVDs, the fast load times of BluRays, the availability of a hardware region-free hack, and the build quality. My DVD player lasted about 10 years and cost about as much. I'm hoping that the Oppo will last as long. By comparison, I tried an LG 390, which seems much flimsier. The tray mechanism is loud and seems shaky. The Oppo in contrast is quiet and solid.

Rob

Comments on OPPO's long-awaited BDP-83 universal Blu-ray player now shipping

is it true that blu ray's load in under 10 seconds on this unit?

adam

Comments on OPPO's long-awaited BDP-83 universal Blu-ray player now shipping

The tray opens almost instantly.
