It hit me this week. If "Ben's hack" that allows ATI's cc tuners to be used with ?any? motherboard opens many doors. I haven't had a chance to play with this, but why not put a closed laptop in the armoir?

At this point I have no idea what video cards with good output are available, nor am I familiar with laptops with SPDIF or hard drive capabilities. Maybe just use HDMI out with audio pass-thru on the TV? Maybe a 1.5TB external drive would work? Certainly Windows Home Server would work, but it isn't as portable for travel. The point being, it would be neat to take the whole media center with you on vacation. It seems like this could be less than $1000 (plus ATI tuners). Any thoughts here?

dmccall

Comments on How-to: Build an HD Media Center for under $1000

Slingbox?

If you are on vacation and have the time to watch TV/Cables shows, then I dont know what to say about your vacation.

Nossy

Comments on How-to: Build an HD Media Center for under $1000

Want a decent one, for around $600

Check mine:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/macleod_1980/sets/72157614270053020/

MacLeod
