Redbox scores deal with Disney, Lions Gate and Sony

At the same time as Universal is waiting to hear how the Redbox lawsuit turns out, Disney, Lions Gate and Sony have signed deals that help Redbox to get a better deal on movies. The studios have faced that fact that $1 kiosk rentals are here to stay and figure they might as well get something out of the deal. Unlike the deals with the likes of Blockbuster that share rental revenues with the studios, Redbox seems to be simply agreeing to lesser terms like not selling used DVDs at discounted prices. No word on when or if the rest of the studios will get with the program and accept that rental kiosks are here to stay. But it is obvious that $1 seem to be just the right price for most consumers.

If the streaming services offered $0.99 rentals they would be much more successful. Hopefully this deal will give all the streaming services more leverage in renegotiating their prices.
I thought they were a $1.00.
BTW, if you google the titles of those articles and then click through you can read the entire article without a WSJ subscription.
I have Netflix, but sometimes i just don't feel like waiting a month for a new release to become avalible and it's easier to go down the street and rent it for a buck at the redbox. They still have a nitch in this market.
I agree. Even at its fastest, it takes Netflix 3 days between returning a DVD to the post office andI getting the next movie on my queue.
Now I use Redbox to watch new releases that I want to watch immediately, and I use Netflix to watch movies and shows that I can't find on Redbox or don't need to watch right away.
I love redbox. It's so easy and cheap. I can just reserve the movie online, then swipe my card at the box, and out comes my movie. The redbox closest to me is in a grocery store, and I'd probably be going there anyway for snack, so it works out well for the couple movies I rent a month. Netflix just doesn't seem worth it if you don't watch movies all the time.
They're getting _too_ popular. :-)
I used to be able to walk up at any time and get a new release. At this point, forget stopping by after work; online reservations are the way to go. Although it's still a hassle to wait while someone is browsing the screens over and over and over...
On the other hand though, I'm seeing more of the larger retail locations put in a second box.
So when are we going to start seeing Blubox?
The Redbox machines at a newly remodeled WalMart are BLUE
I like the idea of Redbox, but I don't use it. I only just got Netflix about 6 months ago, and it is far more convenient for me. Typically, we'll hold onto a disc for a day or two after it arrives before we find the time to sit down together and watch it. Or the kids might want to watch one of their movies more than once before we return it. So the cost of using Redbox instead would quickly approach Netflix, and without the streaming aspect. I could see using it if a title I wanted to see was not immediately available from Netflix, but since I don't often put new releases on my queue, that isn't much of a problem for me.
About the BluBox, there are some (very few) blu-ray titles available, and they only rent them through WalMart Machines... read it right from the site.
But I agree, I want a WHOLE DAMN MACHINE OF BLU!!!!!!
Bad things about Redbox - I must go to a location. Seriously, why would I drive anywhere out of my way for anything beyond food? With netflix I've been spoiled by 9 years of having movies dropped off at my house. Also, the rental fee is too high for something that has less convenience than Netflix. At $1 a rental it would only take 18 movies to = my netflix costs. We're moving around 26-30 DVDs a month with Netflix. That's less than 70 cents a movie and I didn't need to take the time to pull off into a shopping center.
More Blu More Blu In Wisconsin or ???.....lets start a Blu Box grassroots movement RIGHT NOW
I'm sure Redbox is reading these posts..........they would be silly not to.
Maybe we could get them to comment on Blubox ?
