Onkyo shows pride in its DV-BD507 Blu-ray player with lofty $449 price tag
Onkyo's never been one to dabble in the Blu-ray bargain basement, but with BD decks selling for well under the $200 mark, we're wondering what kind of secret sauce is boxed in with the DV-BD507. The outfit's latest Profile 2.0 player doesn't sound too special based on specs alone, as it supports HDMI 1.3a, 1080p output, BD-Live functionality and BonusView features just like every other respectable rival on the market already. Sure, we can't say we don't appreciate its innate ability to process AVCHD files stored on SD / SDHC cards or toasted DVDs, but even on a good day we can't justify the $449 MSRP. Maybe it's upgradable to 3D... or something. Fancy rear shot is waiting after the break.

Doesn't even have an RS-232 port! What are they thinking?
Option A: Sell tens of thousands for $200
Option B: Sell a few hundred for $450
Ummmm????? said the CEO; Let's choose option B. Hey Boss! (Cheers in the background) Great idea! That's why they pay you the big bucks!
That looks like a rebadged Funai model. That means it might work great but I don't see much any reason to fork out 2-3x as much for substantially the same hardware selling under another label. If you're a brand snob, buy the Philips equivalent for half as much. Onkyo pulled the same stunt last year and before that with HD DVD. Maybe some people or installers just can't bear to install a system consisting of different brands.
You nailed it, people like having the brands match. Not to mention, a new Onkyo receiver remote would probably do the basic functions on the BD player.
If you need RS-232, that is what the Integra line is for. Their new Blu-ray Disc Player is the DBS-30.1 and it will sell for $500.
No multichannel analog out on a $450 player? Onkyo seems to be taking queues from Sony's $300 players rather than LG/Samsung or Yamaha/Harman/Denon/Pioneer.
who cares? Oinkyo is crap anyway and they have a long history of screwing their customers. As a FORMER Oinkyo customer I say never never never again.
I had the DBS-6.9 and now have the 30.1 The 30.1 is a decent upgrade with the 2.0 and IR port but it still lacking wireless internet connection and it would be nice to have the YouTube option since a lot of our customers like that feature.
