3D TV channel coming to UK next year, 3D-ready set and glasses required
We can still remember the days, not too long ago, that HD channels were but a sparse luxury. Now of course they're a dime a dozen, but you can still look onward to the next big thing, which BSkyB is wagering will be 3D. The satellite broadcast is gearing up to launch a 3D television station next year to showcase movies, and sports -- the latter of which we're thinking will be the biggest draw. Any customer with a Sky+ HD box can receive the transmission, but you're also gonna need to look past that ragged old flat-panel HDTV and instead use a 3D-ready set and glasses. We can't imagine a huge demand for this anytime in the near future, but if the technology does take off, they'll be more than ready to capitalize.

EPIC FAIL. Who would pay for this.
All those people who bought an APPLE iPHONE that gets Hijacked by a text mesasge...
Now that is EPIC FAIL!!!
ENGADGET BEHOLD YOUR MIGHTY IPHONE HAS FALLEN.. Taken down by a fukin SMS...
Pathetic,.
You can now stop licking Apple's A$$... iPhone officially sucks.
@drew99mtl
You're as bad as the Apple fanboys. Nobody likes a hater who just hates for the sake of it. Get over yourself.
And no, I do not own an iPhone, iPod, or iAnything.
Lotsa people...
Even if it does fail, I don't see how it would be epic...an epic fail is more like jizzmondo, Stephen Ericsson and his driving skills.
Or you, and that picture from 2004, before you were a cow.
Obvious troll is obvious.
Can we like totally get rid of the term "epic fail" yet? Gag me with a spoon.
I probably would, if sky wasn't teh evil.
You mean the same SMS flaw that also affects windows mobile and android?
Zero desire to have this... First I can't find my freaking remote, now I have to worry about finding my 3-d glasses too?
i might consider 3d if i didn't have to wear glasses. sounds like a non-starter.
Cross-eyed 3d Maybe?
Has anything even been film in 3D yet? Wouldn't this basically be just like SD shows that they upconvert to 720P then call it HD. (ahhh would you look at that I just described 50% of HD channels)
Portions of The 2009 superbowl was in 3D and a week later, NBC broadcasted a new TV series in 3D. It would be nice if the big affiliates simulcasted 3D on Subchannel.

3D movies are becoming more popular, and in general they've been pretty good lately.
You do realize 1 D would be a dot?
You do know that image is of an ABC promo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INccz33UuEk), right? Not at all related to the UK, though very well done nonetheless.
This would look really cool on that curved alienware monitor.
Dimensions don't work that way.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjsgoXvnStY
2 d has a width and a height, like a tv. 1d is like either width or height. like barcodes.
HEY one thing at a time, we cant even get all channels to broadcast in 1080i let alone 1080p. lets do that first and then go to 3d!
this will be awesome for the 2 people who buy it
I already have Sky+HD so I'll be looking into a 3DTV next year to be able to view this
"3D TV Channel coming to UK next year, disappointment sure to follow".
Now that's a headline. Learn from the pro, Engadget.
m2h, you might mean "plan" instead of dimension, right?
I think that the generation of who is teenager now won't buy a TV... they will have a huge display or projector connected to the NET
There is an upside to this (based on several assumptions, natch). This 3D will also be HD at 1080i which is what Sky currently use. Two sets of 1080i info = 1080p! So once they realise no one wants a 70 year old method of fake 3D, they can take what they've set up and give us some really decent movie channels :)
My TV display is 2D, but I also experience time passing as I watch. In fact, the passage of time seems integral to get to the end of my shows. Surely my TV is already providing 3 dimensions of entertainment? :)
Despite the obvious, a dot is 2D as it has both width/height, including bar codes and any line, no matter how thin.
I ♥ HD
that´s the only reason i bkught the PS3
This means 3D rips of programmes I can watch on my monitor. Nice.
I would have said this would fail, too, but that's before I saw a 3D IMAX.
