Verizon rolling out more apartment-friendly hardware
We can't imagine who would turn down Verizon's FiOS service because the required hardware to get fiber right into their home was too big; given the option, we'd make room -- like an addition to the home if necessary. Still, we won't argue with anything that opens FiOS up to more people, and Verizon is dropping new, smaller optical network terminal (ONT) hardware that should make the fiber service more attractive to MDU (multi-dwelling unit) properties in particular. Two new models convert the data-laden light pulses into electrical signals suitable for home consumption and measure a scant 1.25x8.5x5.5-inches and 2.5x9x8.25-inches from Alcatel-Lucent and Motorola, respectively; good news for space-conscious apartment dwellers. The good news for installers is that these new boxes are easier to install. Unfortunately, not so easy that Verizon is expanding FiOS into our market yet, but maybe you'll have better luck.

we have it where i live and most people wont get it or get rid of it BECAUSE of the huge box they have to attatch to your house. i wouldnt get it either way verizon sucks and u have to be a scientist just to use the channel guide. time warner is way better
hahhha ooohh boy, you must still have mentality from the 17th century. As a previous TWC customer myself, I couldn't be happier switching to FiOS and you should do your homework instead, go search on google "fios vs cable" and educate yourself. Only problem with fios is the trouble you gotta go through once you have to call billing, but so far I haven't had that issue.
Yes the ONT are a but large but it is a small price to pay for what is the latest and greatest thing out there. By the way, anyone know how long from the time they lay or in my case hang the fiber on the poles until the time they actually are ready to install in your area? I've been looking at the same spool of fiber hanging from the tele-pole on the corner of my street for over 2 months now. Calling Verizion and all they can tell me is that it is not showing as availible in my area....but the fiber is there....I see it every day.....I watched the Verizion trucks pull up and string the cable down the line from one pole to the next pole and so on.....
For me and other family members in other locations, its has been about 9 months between the wiring and availability.
Yeah.. can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want Verizon FiOS.

I live in an apartment in a FIOS area and the property management company won't allow FIOS installs in our complex because of the huge boxes. I hope they start rolling these boxes out here soon so I can dump Comcast!
Same here. I spoke to my apartment complex management company about FiOS because my town had just signed the contract allowing Verizon to wire the town. But my management company had already told me that they weren't considering FiOS because the ONTs were "an eyesore". Hopefully these new ONTs will roll out by the time the town is ready for FiOS! Can't wait to get rid of Comcast!
@ cash & Josee .... you've finally found another site to bash Fios. You must be proud of yourselves. btw how much do you get paid to do it ? Engadget is just reporting a new piece
information on a product.
Verizon sucks!......umm but then so does Comcast........
I'm in a townhouse complex which Verizon decided to skip when wiring up to houses all around the area. We have big wiring boxes in the complex, so it shouldn't have even been too difficult. Too bad for them because Comcast already upgraded our area for DOCSIS 3 modems which are pretty nice as well.
