CEA president Shapiro talks DTV transition
With the analog shutoff safely in the rear view mirror, CEA (Consumer Electronics Association) president Gary Shapiro took some time to talk about the move to our new digital airwaves (and also looked ahead to our 3D futures). All in all, some pretty interesting reading, but he makes a great point in chiding the broadcast industry -- by waiting until the last minute to get onboard the HD bandwagon, broadcasters missed out on what could have been positive market differentiation for their services versus cable and satellite. All's well that ends well, though, and we're just gad the plug got pulled on analog (with few casualties to boot), and we'd like the CEA president should know we celebrated the move. What Happened to Turbo HD on Dishnetwork ?
They don't have the HD channels only package anymore ?
I don't know about other areas, but in my area, all the area broadcasters were doing digital for many years. Most of them were doing HD for several years too. But that was mostly for prime time and special events, off prime-time shows, including reruns of prime time shows available in HD, are sometimes only shown as SD.
Ugh. The digital transition was a complete failure in my area. I have 2 different TV's receiving OTA programming (one has a dig tuner and one uses a converter box) and they picked up EVERY digital/HD channel prior to the transition. Now NOTHING comes in...I'm lucky to even get 2 or 3 digital channels to come in without interruption. And I've tried the steps the FCC has suggested, unplugging/rescanning/clearing memory, and nothing. Ridiculous. I can't even watch those TVs anymore.

They kept saying to rescan, rescan and I have and the number of Analog channels that are still active in our market is enough to make you think the transition never happened. And that the FCC let channels go back to their VHF slots when the purpose was to open them up . . . I just don't get it. But then a while ago a couple stations were stepping on my in-house cable system and shouldn't have and when I inquired the FCC did not know that they were broadcasting and on those channels and they didn't care. So to hear that things are a mess, I'm not surprised.
So when's the next transition happening? You know the real one.
