Boxee locks up additional funding, plots route from underground to mainstream
We're not sure how this affects the zero-dollar revenue goal for 2009, but popular media player software Boxee announced it has closed a $6 million round of financing including a new partner, General Catalyst. We'll let the money men assess value, the key point for users is how this affects the company's plan to take the platform from underground darling to mainstream hit - embedding the software in connected TVs, Blu-ray player, game consoles and set-top boxes. With a Windows alpha release in the bag and latest support from MLB.tv Boxee seems well on the way towards reaching larger audiences, CEO Avner Ronen says to look forward to the beta release this fall, more content deals and extending the App Store and API support. Our advice is to avoid tearing an ACL itself dancing on stage like another recent independent performer turned-mainstream star, what would you like to see from Boxee now that the company has more resources to provide it?

"We're not sure how this affects the zero-dollar revenue goal for 2009"
It's pretty basic. If you have zero revenue and big expenses, you need a sugar daddy to float you when you run out of money. (zero - a lot = negative a lot)
How about some dedicated hardware? ATV doesn't quite cut the mustard for high encoding rate 720p MKV files. Forget about 1080p. I don't want to blow the coin on a mac mini and really don't feel like putting the effort into building an HTPC. They need an optimized branded hardware platform (maybe even partner w/ XBMC) so people can take the guesswork out of what to build.

I want a simple, HD-capable set-top box.
I would also take a Blu-Ray player with Boxee embedded.
I would also (also) take Boxee being added to game consoles. I'd just love the irony if it got incorporated into the Xbox, considering their roots.
haha, yes TJ that would be funny to see it in xbox!
I want to see full own media center DVR added to boxee. Yes with support for digital cable cards. If this is an add on ATI digital cable tuner on a PC, or if they come up with a whole new hardware, I want to replace the piece of shit slow ass Motorola DVR that runs a very low resolution 4:3 1990's interface.
game consoles you say? that would be awesome. though i'm putting the finishing touches on my new HTPC now, it would still be nice to be able to use a better interface on my PS3 or 360. i don't like Media Center (or extender) and while my PS3 can play most stuff i throw at it, the XMB interface isn't nearly as pretty as Boxee. i use XBMC again now after finding out Media Center sucks but i wouldn't mind more options, like remote play on my PSP or Zune (i can dream!)
I have an idea for monetizing how people us Boxee that could be patented. Anybody want to talk about? It addresses things I have wanted as a consumer of video for a couple of decades.
