Panasonic taking 3D, Avatar on world tour this fall
Instead of offering a tour of its 3D lab as we hoped, Panasonic is bringing 103-inch plasmas and 3D capable Blu-ray players to you, planning to send around tractor trailers to promote its technology and the new James Cameron flick, Avatar. IFA and CES will also get the full 3D experience, with the company still planning to put hardware on shelves in 2010. It expects HDMI 1.4 and Blu-ray 3D spec standardization to have the market primed and ready, and while 3D may not be for everyone, we're sure those interested are just waiting to toss those silly two-color glasses in the trash to get with this stereoscopic solution.

As difficult as it's been just getting Bluray working properly on HTPC with lossless audio, I can only imagine -how much of a pain it's going to be/how long of a wait it's going to be- trying to get hdmi1.4/Bluray 3d on the PC
From the way Cameron's been talking up Avatar, it had better be nothing less than the Citizen Kane of 3D cinema. If he ends up hitting another grand slam, it just might be enough to get 3D into the home for real this time.
3D TV will fail. It will be more of a flop than BD Live. You heard it here first. Guaranteeing a flop/fail for 3D TV. As far as HDMI 1.4 goes, well, that will pass, because that is a sure thing that will make consumers re-buy/update their electronics (HDTV's, BD players, receivers, etc). But 3D is & will always be a joke. If it becomes a success, you all have the right to bash on me. But until that happens my statement will stand strong!
i think 3d at home will be awesome.i saw the new technology at CES last year, and it looked great,(u2 concert,movies(starwars),ps3 games).even the 3D display without glasses was ok.
the technology is here,if they can get the pricing right ,its gonna be the next big thing!
While this may be cool (or not) I would prefer that Panasonic and other manufacturers make their CURRENT Blu-Ray players as quick and dependable as $50 DVD players are before they plow ahead with even more questionable features that could gum up the works. If you read the online forums it seems that almost all the players have weird quirks and problems that drive people crazy. I have the Panny BD60 which freezes occasionally and takes forever to load up, although I do love the PQ & SQ. I realize that the Blu technology is much more complicated than DVD but you would think by the 4th or 5th generation of a product they would have the bugs worked out.
Quote: "toss those silly two-color glasses in the trash to get with this stereoscopic solution".
Please get your facts straight: two-color glasses ARE stereoscopic. In fact, all stereoscopic systems require glasses (or, refrased, all 3-D systems with glasses are stereoscopic). It is only the AUTO-stereoscopic systems that do not require glasses, but they require a whole lot of money and are not yet mass-produced.
The best known steroscopic systems are:
1.) Two-color glasses (red and green/blue) have the worst color-quality, but they are for home use and compatible with every TV. Therefore, all released 3-D Blu-ray discs feature this system.
2.) Polarized glasses (like Imax) require two pojectors; not for home-use.
3.) Shutter glasses, require only one display, but with higher framerates to alternate left and right eye frames (like the Mitsubishi and Samsung 3D-ready displays); for home use, but requires 3D-capable display.
Just my $0.02
Oh, and by the way, Panasonic also use the 'shutter glasses' technology; so, nothing new here. Although they would like you to believe it is something new, it is in fact the same technology that Mitsubishi and Samsung are using FOR YEARS already! The only difference is that we are talking about HD instead of SD, but the rest is old news/technology. Their press release stating that only Plasma-TV's are capable of 3D is just simply not true!
