After bigger, thinner and brighter, Samsung planning even faster LCDs for IFA
The jury is still out on whether 200 / 240hz motion technology (last year's prototype pictured above) provided an appreciable difference but that won't stop Samsung from bringing 400 / 480hz (PAL / NTSC standards) LCD HDTVs to IFA 2009 next month. This is the second time we've heard rumors of a spec bump in motion technology, using black frame insertion instead of more complicated (& expensive) tech to create new frames from existing ones. LG has already demo'd its 480hz LCDs and the two will surely race to get a bigger number on store shelves, but we'll need an eye-on before determining if it's an upgrade worth waiting for.

I hope with all these incremental bumps they finally get it to the point that these displays actually show multiples of 24 fps properly rather than just play interpolate the motion.
On a similar note, when the displays hit 600Hz, they should be able to display PAL, NTSC, ATSC and 108024/25fps without any artifacts. I'm not holding my breath, though.
NA Kuros can already display 24 and 50 at 72 Hz and 75/100 Hz respectively, besides 60p of course. It seems this year not only the best blacks die, but also the best frame display compatibility.
Samsung is going to have a fine time trying to explain this to customers. This really is the same thing as what AMD and Intel were doing back in the day when FSB speeds jumped from 100/133Hz to 800/1066Hz.
In the end, people don't want pictures that blur. They want them to be fast. I wonder when we'll see full fledged processors in televisions. I'd definitely buy a TV if I knew that it could process video data from the web or from a DVD faster/smoother than another TV.
Samsung needs a value line of HDTVs to try and undercut Vizio. Vizio will keep eating their lunch because they have the distribution, the warranty, but bettery yet they have competitively priced other brands out of the market.
LCD sucks
I'll be impressed when they can handle motion better than plasma.
Wow, Samsung is leading the way as a premier LCD manufacturer in the world. I think they surpassed Sony for quality, especially when the cost is a factor.
Few weeks ago, I did see a Samsung LED TV. Wow, the picture quality is amazing! And the thickness was less than 2inches! My Pioneer Kuro looks like an obese panel compared to these Samsung LEDS.
480/960 Hz.
I think we can get the most increase in quality if the movie studies can afford new cameras that can go beyond 24p.
Please someone, send them your mobile phone that handles 60Hz.
Have always been a big Samsung fan, but they won't get a nickel of my money until they drop this notion that LCDs should have highly reflective, glossy screens.
