We had a good feeling that Microsoft might have a thing or two to announce around Windows 7 Media Center at the upcoming
CEDIA show in Atlanta this September, but now we can start the official countdown. The after-hours event at ESPN Zone will help kick off the show in Atlanta at 6:30pm -- the event is invite only, but don't worry, we'll be bringing you the events live as they happen. Although the specific announcements are
anyone's guess, the invite did let us know that all of the Windows Media Center news and updates will break there, as well as the winner of the Ultimate Install Contest. So that's just over two weeks until all your home media hopes will be fulfilled -- or destroyed -- depending on your perspective.
They better have a damn good explanation on the dish tuner or a new hardware version ready to announce (or even bring back directv).
It's a chance that engadget care… because no one else do.
ummm. what?
I think he is right. The fact that it's only Drawbaugh that doing the media center thing and Kim and Lawler don't seem to give a rats @$$ bout mce says a lot.
It's a nerds toy (explains why Ben is Mr. MCE) but people with lives don't care. Jjust give them a Tivo or a regular cable box dvr and they are fine.
tru2way could use a little explaining as well all things regarding Cablelabs and Windows Media Center.
It's time to stop screwing with progress you cable-types.
Here you go Media Center lovers.. the HTPC is dead.
Long live the cable company DVR.

It is pretty clear from most of the comments on this article, that people don't believe the authors contention that "Laptops are the new HTPC" or that that is really going to make any difference.
One stop media centers have been a small market and willl always be so. Our only hope is that Microsoft will solve the issues with CableCARDs and SDV so that we can continue to enjoy our Media Centers.
Wish I was able to attend CEDIA... Atlanta is a bit too far. Good thing I know a site that will cover the event ;) I'm actually excited for news regarding HTPC's.
This is huge for me ... I invested a ton of time and $$$ for this Media center to work out and i am still not using it as much as i should .. Even with XPS420 , Cable card and 2 Xbox360's just for WMC.. I hope they can get it right

I'm waiting for this event and Core i5 to be released before I go buy an HP Slimline (hopefully updated) as the basis of my HTPC with multi-stream CableCard.
Media Centers bring in NO extra revenue for Microsoft! Tuners capable of recording premium content are a DRM headache for all concerned. Sad, but true.
Media Center is dead... Long live Media Center...
Look for the X-Box 360, with monthly Live subscriptions to take the spotlight.
Well, lets see how long XBOX live can keep its current business model with PS3 Network evolution.
Anyway, why cant MediaCenter join the xbox live/Zune Marketplace and bring some revenue if thats the case?
There seems to be so many prophets of he appocalypse this days around MediaCenter.
Can't wait to hear what you learn, Ben!
Well, i mean, Microsoft is goin nowhere actually, they don't know a thing about the usual user, they're site on a bunch of money but they have no idea what to do with.
I think it's the last compagny that can bring the media center to the mass.
